During her time at K-State Deb (Phil) Torneden was a four-time NCAA All-American and eight-time Big Eight Conference Champion. She set three Big Eight indoor records and two Big Eight outdoor records during her career.

Along the way to being named the 1984 Big Eight Female Athlete of the year, Phil set the world's best time for 1,000 yards indoors with a time of 2:29.79.  She was also honored as the Most Outstanding Performer at the 1984 Big Eight Indoor Conference Championships.

As of 2013, she is still the current Kansas State record holder in the indoor mile (4:39:06) as well as outdoors in the 3,000 meters (9:09:68). She also still owns the second-best indoor time in the 1000 meters (2:46:80) and the third-best indoor time in the 800 meters (2:09.9) at K-State. Additionally, she held the Kansas State outdoor record in the 1,500 meters until 2003 with a time of 4:12.94 and currently ranks No. 2 all-time in that event.  Phil went on to become a four-time Olympic Trials Qualifier (1984, 1992, 1996 and 2000).
