Margaret Thompson won two Big 8 intercollegiate individual rifle championships in 1963 and 1964 while at K-State. She was the first female to be awarded a varsity letter in 1964, but her record breaking status was just beginning. Thompson went on to win five gold medals at the Pan American Game and seven gold medals at the World Championships in rifle. In 1976, Thompson became the first woman ever to win an Olympic shooting medal, capturing a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Montreal. Thompson, who at one time held 13 shooting world records, has been inducted into six Hall of Fames, including the Women’s Sports Foundation Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.
