Ward Haylett

In 1928, Ward Haylett was hired as the first track and field coach at Kansas State University. He stayed on the job for 35 years before retiring in 1963. In addition to coaching track and field, he was an instructor at K-State and even spent three years (’42-’44) as the schools head football coach – all for a salary of $2,800 per year.
During his time at K-State, Haylett mentored a powerful track and field program that yielded numerous All-Americans, NCAA Champions and Olympians.
He was an assistant coach on the ’48 Olympic team and headed up the U.S. delegation to the ’37 Pan American games. Three times he was a member of the United States Olympic Track and Field Committee.
