In its first action of the fall season, the Kansas State baseball team pounded out 16 hits, including eight extra-base hits, to post a 13-6 victory over the Ontario Blue Jays in an exhibition game played Saturday afternoon at Frank Myers Field. The Blue Jays are a traveling 18-and-under Canadian All-Star team.
Ontario jumped on the scoreboard first, as second baseman Joel Lynch scored from third base on a throwing error by Wildcat senior right-handed pitcher Ross Hawley in the top of the first inning. Lynch doubled after a groundout to start the inning then advanced to third base on a passed ball.
Kansas State responded with two runs apiece in the second and third innings to gain the lead, 4-1. The Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, as junior first baseman Timothy Foley scored from third base on a groundout by freshman second baseman Jason Long. Junior catcher Tim Doty then gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead, as he advanced home from third on a single by sophomore outfielder Brad Anzman. K-State then added two more runs in the third, as junior designated hitter Pat Maloney doubled then scored on senior outfielder Nick Sorensen's follow up double. Sorensen then added the fourth run on freshman Brett Williams' double to right field.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Ontario added another run in the top of the sixth inning on designated hitter Jeremy Brittain's RBI single. Kansas State would respond with four runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by freshman outfielder Mark Montgomery's two-run shot over the right field fence. The Wildcats would add five runs in the eighth to extend their lead to 13-2 before the Blue Jays added the final four runs on a grand slam by catcher Jordan Ripco in the top of the ninth inning.
Freshman infielder Jerad Head led four Wildcats with two hits in the game, as the Topeka, Kan., native posted a 2-for-3 afternoon with two RBI and two runs scored. Montgomery went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Maloney and Long turned in 2-for-5 performances with two runs scored. Freshman Andrew Dunsmore, who played for the Blue Jays' last season, went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Ripco led the Blue Jays with a 2-for-4 performance with a team-best four RBIs and one run scored, while outfielder Kern Watts added a 2-for-5 afternoon in the losing effort.
Hawley picked up the win for the Wildcats, as he allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts in three innings from the mound. Starter Kyle Hill took the loss for the Blue Jays, as he allowed four runs (all earned) on six hits with five strikeouts in three innings of work.
Kansas State continues fall practice this week and will begin the best-of-seven, Fall Ball World Series on Monday, Oct. 22, as the team will be broken into two squads, the Purple and White Sox, to battle for the title. The losing team will have to make dinner for the winning team.
