Kansas State Eases Past Spartak Moscow, 94-56, In Exhibition Action

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Freshman forward Kendra Wecker tallied 20 points for thesecond straight game to lead five Wildcats in double-figures, as the KansasState women's basketball team finished the exhibition season undefeated forthe third consecutive season with a 94-56 victory over Spartak Moscow Sundayafternoon played before 1,712 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.
Kansas State improved to 12-8 all-time in exhibition games, including8-3 in the Deb Patterson era, and posted its fifth straight victory.Spartak Moscow fell to 0-8 on its nine-game, five-state tour of colleges anduniversities.
Kansas State shot above 50 percent from the field for the secondstraight game by connecting on a season-high 56.7 percent of its shots,while it held Spartak to just 38.5 percent shooting. The Wildcats alsoforced 28 turnovers, including 17 steals, and grabbed 34 rebounds.
Wecker led five Wildcats in double-figures with a game-high 20 points inthe victory, including 8-of-12 shooting from the field, while tallying ateam-tying five assists and five steals. She turned in 21 points in herdebut in the Wildcats' 83-53 win over the Houston Jaguars on Wednesday, Nov.7. Fellow freshman Megan Mahoney turned in 19 points on 8-of-14 shootingwith seven rebounds, while another freshman Laurie Koehn added 14 points.For the second straight game, sophomore Nicole Ohlde tallied a double-double for the Wildcats with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a game-high 10rebounds.
Forward Marina Karpunina posted 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting to leadfour Moscow players in double-figures. Forwards Lyudmila Sapova and SvetlanMakssimenko added 11 points each, while forward Galina Guseva tossed in 10points and a team-best five rebounds and three steals.
Moscow kept the game tight for most of the first half until Kansas Statebroke a 20-all tie with an 8-0 run beginning at the 9:55 mark. The Wildcatscontinued their scoring spree over the next 2:19 with a 12-2 run thatextended their lead to a first-half high 18 points at 40-22. Moscow couldget no closer than 13 points, as K-State went into the lockerroom with a47-29 halftime advantage.
Kansas State continued its hot shooting in the second half, as theWildcats ran out to a 27-point lead with an 8-0 run beginning at the 13:31mark. The game would get no closer than 25 points the rest of the way, asthe Wildcats built as much as a 40-point advantage in an eventual 94-56victory.
Kansas State opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 16, when theWildcats travel to Atlanta, Ga., to take on Georgia Tech at the AlexanderMemorial Coliseum beginning at 4:30 p.m. K-State begins the home portion ofits schedule on Monday, Nov. 19 when the Wildcats entertain IUPUI atBramlage Coliseum beginning at 7 p.m.
