Series: First meeting
With its first win under the belt, the Kansas State women's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Bramlage Coliseum tonight to take on the IUPUI Jaguars in the Wildcats' home opener.
The Wildcats are coming off a 74-70 victory over Georgia Tech on Nov. 16. The Jaguars enter tonight's game 1-0 after beating Eastern Illinois, 69-61.Kansas State will be looking for its 25th home-opening win in its 34th season of play. The Wildcats have won four of five home-openers under head coach Deb Patterson.
Tonight's game is the first meeting between the two teams and IUPUI's second of six road games to start this young season.
Kansas State In Season Openers
Wildcats are 24-9 all-time in home openers, winning eight of the past nine games. Last year, Kansas State beat UMKC, 62-49. In Bramlage Coliseum home-openers, the 'Cats are 9-4.
A Quick Glance at Kansas State
Kansas State won its 25th season opener with a 74-70 win on Nov. 16 over Georgia Tech, a team that received seven votes in the first USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll.
Freshman Laurie Koehn lead the Wildcats in scoring, posting a game-high 27 points against the Yellow Jackets. The Hesston, Kan., native scored nine of her 27 points in the final 1:16, including four of six from the free throw line.
Freshmen Kendra Wecker posted her first collegiate double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Nicole Ohlde picked up where she left off in 2001 with 17 points and three blocks against Georgia Tech.
A Glance at IUPUI
IUPUI, Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, opened its 2001-2002 season last Friday at Eastern Illinois with a 69-61 victory.
Junior Tiffany Kyser is the leading returnee for the Jaguars, as she averaged 14.8 points per game last year. In the season opener, the 5-10 forward collected 20 points, 10 rebounds and shot 66.6 percent (10-15) from the free throw line.
Three other Jaguars were in double figures. Junior Amber Holle tallied 16 points, senior Amy Frey had 13, including three treys, and Abbe Brauman came off the bench for 10 points
Look for IUPUI to shoot the three after sinking five in the first game, 10-of-31 in the exhibition season and hitting 159-of-479 (33.1 percent) last year. Frey is the Jaguars top marksman, hitting 3-of-7 against Eastern Illinois and 6-of-12 in the exhibition season.
The Jaguars finished 11-18 last year and 8-8 in the Mid-Continent Conference. Head coach Kris Simpson is in her seventh sesason and has a 71-91 record entering tonight's game.
Kansas State Beats Georgia Tech In Season Opener
Freshman Laurie Koehn scored a game-high 27 points in her first collegiate game, while teammate Kendra Wecker had her first collegiate double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lift Kansas State to a 74-70 victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Alexander Memorial Coliseum on Nov. 16.
K-State sophomore Nicole Ohlde finished with 17 points and three blocks. Regina Tate led Georgia Tech with 23 points and 14 rebounds.
Koehn scored nine of her 27 points in the final three minutes of the game, including her seventh three-pointer of the evening with 1:16 left. The Hesston, Kan. native, then went on to sink four of six free throws in the final 23 seconds for the victory.
After trailing at halftime, 33-31, Kansas State regained the lead for a good portion of the second half when the Wildcats went on a 7-2 run with 8:58 remaining. K-State had its biggest lead at the 6:50 mark when Koehn sank her sixth three-pointer of the game to put the 'Cats up, 61-55. Georgia Tech tied the game at 66 after back-to-back baskets from Tate, but Kansas State only allowed four points in the last 1:50 of the game.
The Wildcats hit 52 percent from the floor in the second half and finished with a 52 percent mark from the field throughout the game.
Milestone Victory
Kansas State became just the 18th team in NCAA Division I history to win 575 games when it beat Georgia Tech on Nov. 16. The Wildcats are also just the 3rd Big 12 team to reach the milestone (Texas, Texas Tech).
Dandy Of A Debut
Freshman Laurie Koehn had a dandy of a debut on Nov. 16. The 5-8, guard tallied 27 points, two assists and two steals against Georgia Tech. She also shot 63.6 percent from the field, 70.0 percent from the three-point arc and 75.0 percent from the foul line.
The last Wildcats to score in double-digits in a season opener was sophomore Nicole Ohlde, who had 14 points last year against Western Illinois.
Koehn From Three
Rookie Laurie Koehn lived up to her billing as she sank the third-most three-pointers in a game in school history on Nov. 16. Koehn sank seven of 10 treys in the season opener.
The last Wildcat to sink seven three's was Kim Woodlee on Nov. 22, 1998 at Drake.
Block Party
Kansas State had a block party in its season opener at Georgia Tech on Nov. 16. The 'Cats blocked six shots and sophomore Nicole Ohlde registered three on her own.
The last time the Wildcats had six or more blocks was when they had eight at Colorado on Feb. 16, 2000.
Freshman Staters
As predicted, head coach Deb Patterson went with four freshmen and a sophomore in her starting lineup against Georgia Tech. It was the first time in school history the Wildcats started more than three rookies in a starting rotation. Making their debut with sophomore Nicole Ohlde were rookies Kari Hanson, Megan Mahoney, Laurie Koehn and Kendra Wecker.
From Downtown
Kansas State continued its tradition of being a three-point shooting team after the Wildcats hit 8-of-17 (.471) against Georgia Tech.
K-State last hit 47 percent or better from the three-point arc in the 2000-2001 regular-season final against Baylor on Feb. 28, 2001. The Wildcats shot 50.0 percent, hitting 8-of-16 treys.
Nifty Fifty
K-State opened the season shooting 51.9 percent (27-of-52) from the field against Georgia Tech. The Wildcats last hit 50 percent (21-of-34) or better from the field against Kansas in Lawrence on Jan. 13, 2001.
Dishing It Out
Freshman Megan Mahoney led K-State in assists on Nov. 16. The Black Hawk, S.D., native dished out six of the Wildcats' 15 assists against Georgia Tech.
Kansas State vs. IUPUI: Series History and Factoids
-First meeting of the series.
-Second year straight K-State will open its season at home with a Mid-Continent Conference team. The Wildcats beat UMKC last season in Bramlage Coliseum.
-This season is the second year in a row that the Wildcats will play a team from the Mid-Continent Conference (UMKC 11/17/00, Western Illinois 11/21/00). K-State is 11-5 against MCC teams.
-The Big 12 Conference went 9-0 in non-conference-regular season games against the MCC last year.
-Kansas State has had only one player in its history from the state of Indiana. Arneetrice Cobb, a native of Gary, Ind., averaged 4.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per game during the 1989-90 season.
-The 'Cats are 0-2 versus teams from the Hoosier State (Indiana 0-1 & Purdue 0-1).
Kansas State vs. the Mid-Continent Conference
The Wildcats are 11-5 against teams from the MCC. The last time K-State played an MCC team was in 2000 when it beat Western Michigan, 90-81, on the road.
They Are All Thieves
Kansas State continued to show their knack for thievery in the season opener. The Wildcats made 13 steals in the contest and four players, Megan Mahoney (4), Kendra Wecker (3), Laurie Koehn (2) and Nicole Ohlde (2), had two or more steals in the game. Additionally, six of 10 Wildcats had a steal.
Looking For A November To Remember
The Wildcats started November out right with a victory and have five more games in the 11th month of the year.
The 'Cats are 62-25 all-time in November and last season, Kansas State was 3-1. Ten teams have also gone undefeated in November, the most recent the 1996-97 team that started the season 4-0.
Kansas Connection
The Kansas Connection made an immediate impact on the Wildcat lineup on Nov. 16. Senior Kristin Rethman, sophomore Nicole Ohlde and freshmen Laurie Koehn and Kendra Wecker (junior Danielle Hutton is injured) collected 64 of Kansas State's 74 points (86 percent) and 15 of the Wildcats 27 rebounds (56 percent) against Georgia Tech.

Kansas State Signs Jessica McFarland
Kansas State women's basketball head coach Deb Patterson announced Nov. 14 Jessica McFarland of Derby, Kan., signed national letter of intent to play at Kansas State.
McFarland, a 6-foot-2 center from Derby High School, averaged 16.3 points and 11.2 rebounds per game, and shot 55.4 percent from the field last season. She set school records for single-season scoring (407) and rebounds (281), and rebounds in a game (20) in 2000-2001. McFarland enters her senior year fourth on the career scoring list (885) and third in career rebounding (651).
Ranked the 76th-best center by the All Star Girls Report, McFarland was third team all-state all-class and first-team all-class 6A selection and All-SE Kansas in 2000-2001. She was also named all-league and league MVP last year. As a sophomore, she was second team all-class 6A, All-SE Kansas and all-league. A three-year starter and letterwinner, McFarland has helped Derby to a 40-30 record over three years, a fourth-place finish at the state tournament in 2000-2001, a sub-state championship in 1999-2000 and runner-up spot in sub-state in 1998-99.
Youthful Wildcats
How young is this Kansas State team? Consider that 10 players on the roster are in their first or second year with the Wildcats.
More importantly, of the 10 youngsters, four of them have game experience, and six are freshmen.
Up Next
Kansas State takes to the road next when they play in the St. Thomas Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Nov. 24-26.
The Wildcats will play three games in the Jam. They open with Richmond at 6:45 p.m. on Nov. 24, then No. 22 Arizona State at 2:15 p.m. on Nov. 25 and finish with Western Michigan at 10:15 a.m. on Nov. 26.
The Spiders are 0-1 on the season after losing to Virginia Tech, 76-62, on Nov. 16. Sun Devils beat St. Peter's, 72-67, in its opener and Broncos are 1-1 with a win over Eastern Washington, 72-56, and a loss to Arkansas State, 72-62.
