Manhattan, Kan. - The Kansas State University men's golf team has signed Matt Van Cleave and Josh Persons to national letters of intent for the 2002-03 season, head coach Tim Norris announced on Wednesday. Van Cleave will enter K-State next year as a sophomore, while Persons will be an incoming freshman.
Persons is a two-time all-state performer and the 2001 North Dakota state high school champion. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Persons also earned all-conference honors for Fargo North High School as a sophomore and junior after capturing the Eastern Dakota Conference individual crown as a freshman.
A freshman at Indian Hills Community College, Van Cleave also possesses an impressive prep resume. He was a four-time all-state, all-conference and all-district choice at Maryville (Mo.) High School before moving on to the Ottumwa, Iowa, community college this fall. As a prep senior, he finished sixth at the Missouri 3A state championship after earning the individual title at the 2A level as a junior in 2000.
"Both Persons and Van Cleave are great additions to our program," said Norris. "Matt comes from the No. 1 Division II community college in the country and both have earned state, district and national honors throughout their careers. They should be ready to make an impact for us next fall."
