Cats Tied for Fourth After First Day in California

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Led by a pair of scores of 1-under par 70 from senior JP Roller and freshman Oliver Toyer, the Kansas State men's golf team is tied for fourth place following Monday's first round of The Prestige held at the par-71, 7,129-yard Greg Norman Course of PGA WEST.
The Wildcat duo – which is tied for 11th on the individual leaderboard – helped Kansas State record a first-round total of even-par 284 as the Wildcats are tied with No. 28 Stanford and No. 44 Little Rock. Those three teams are just one shot behind third-place UNC Wilmington and two shots back of second-place Oregon.
"It was a solid day for us," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We dropped a few shots on the last hole, but overall I thought we played well. JP was really steady, and I am really proud of Olly and the way he bounced back after a tough hole on No. 6. There is a lot of golf to play, but I feel good about where we are. We just need to stay patient and keep chipping away."
Roller, a native of Jenks, Oklahoma, produced his third under-par round of the season thanks to two birdies on each side of the course. After finishing at even par through nine holes, he went 1-under par on the second 9 to finish out the round.
A native of Cambridgeshire, England, Toyer was at even par through five holes before carding an 8 on the par-4 6th. However, he bounced back with six birdies and only one bogey over his final 12 holes to come away with the sixth-under par score of his freshman campaign.
Senior Alex Lindstrom is tied for 22nd place at even-par 71 with four total birdies during the round. Sophomore Fionn Dobbin is tied for 42nd place with a first-round total of 2-over par 73, one shot ahead of freshman Ville Virkkala, who is tied for 56th place.
Oregon State opened up a seven-shot lead at 9-under par 275 thanks to the play of Rylan Johnson, who is atop the individual leaderboard at 5-under par 66.
In The Prestige Individual held at the Golf Club at Terra Lago, seniors Shea Harmeson and Ben Stoller – the latter of which recorded six birdies on the day – are tied for 18th place at 3-over par 75. Stanford's Ethan Gao and UCLA's Luciano Conian lead that event at 3-under par 69.
K-State begins second-round play of The Prestige on Tuesday with tee times off the 10th hole at 1:55 p.m. (CT). Live results of The Prestige can be followed on SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd, while results of the Prestige Individual are available here.
