Manhattan, Kan. - Senior offensive lineman Andy Eby was named a third team All-American by the Football News, the magazine announced this week.
Eby, a 6-foot-3, 280-pounder from Olathe, Kan., is the first Kansas State player named to a postseason All-America team in 2001. He is the first Wildcat offensive lineman to earn an All-America honor since Randall Cummins was a third-team pick by College Football News last season.
Eby has anchored a Kansas State offensive line that, despite being decimated by injury, has opened holes for Josh Scobey to become a 1,000-yard rusher and have the Wildcats in fourth nationally in rushing offense. He has played four of the five offensive-line positions this year, missing only time at right tackle. Eby also has started games at left tackle, center and right guard this season.
Eleven Wildcats Named to Academic All-Big 12 Team
Seven Kansas State players earned first-team honors and four others were on the second team as the Big 12 Conference announced its Academic All-Big 12 squad earlier this week.
The first-team group was led by offensive lineman Andy Eby and defensive back Jon McGraw, each of whom were Verizon Academic All-District honorees earlier this month.
Also named to the first team academic all-league first team were senior punter Mike Ronsick, grad-student and long snapper Neil Gosch, junior linebacker Andy Klocke, sophomore linebacker Terry Pierce and freshman tight end Brian Casey.
Second-team honorees were senior Chris Devore, senior Chad Wallerstedt, junior Marc Dunn and junior Nick Hoheisel.
First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2 or better grade-point average, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher either cumulatively or the two previous semestres, and must have participated in 60 percent of the team's games. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a nimimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
