Team Notes
With todays' win, K-State has now won eight straight games over the Cyclones. Iowa State, however, continues to lead the all-time series 46-35-4. Over the last seven games, KSU has won by an average score of 42.4 to 11.1.
The Wildcats have not allowed a touchdown over the last nine quarters. The last touchdown scored by the opposition came in the third quarter of the Texas A&M when the Aggies returned a fumble 17 yards for a TD. The last offensive touchdown occurred earlier in that quarter when Joe Weber of A&M scored on a one-yard run with 1:02 left in the period. The Wildcats, therefore, have not allowed an offensive TD in the last 136:02 minutes of play.
Over the last 10 quarters, the K-State defense has yielded just 422 yards of total offense, for an average of only 2.93 yards per play (24 plays/36 yards in the second half vs. Texas A&M, 67 plays/212 yards vs. Kansas, 53 plays/174 yards vs. Iowa State).
Wildcats vs. the run: The K-State defense, which entered the game ranked seventh nationally against the run, held the Cyclones to just 23 yards on the ground, their lowest output of the season. KSU has held the opposition under 100 yards rushing in six of eight games this year. Over the last four games, the Wildcat defense has yielded just 46.8 rushing yards per game.
Rushing offense: K-State, which posted 343 yards on the ground today, has averaged 316.7 yards rushing over the last three games. KSU also went over 300 yards on the ground for the third time this season.
Wildcat pressure: After posting eight sacks in the first four games, the Wildcat defense recorded three sacks today. Over the last two games, the defense has posted six sacks.
The Wildcats have now won five straight, and 15 of their last 16, games in the month of November. The lone loss during that stretch came with a 41-15 defeat at the hands of Nebraska (Nov. 20, 1999).
With his first-quarter interception, DB Derrick Yates recorded the Wildcats' first INT in three games (none vs. Texas A&M and Kansas). The 'Cats last picked off a pass vs. Texas Tech when they intercepted Kliff Kingsbury three times. KSU had picked off 10 passes in the four games prior to that stretch. The 'Cats made their second pick of the day late in the fourth quarter when DB Milton Proctor returned a pass 13 yards for a TD. It was K-State's first interception returned for a touchdown since Jon McGraw went 71 yards vs. Colorado (Sept. 30, 2000).
K-State won the time of possession battle for the 13th straight game.
K-State runs its record to 4-0 this season when leading at the half.
Individual Notes
The Wildcats' offensive line tandem LG Matt Martin, LG Nick Leckey, C Steve Washington, RG Andy Eby and RT Dralinn Burks started its second straight game. It marked the first time this season K-State has started the same O-line unit in back-to-back games.
RB Josh Scobey posted 80 yards on 11 carries in the first quarter, his highest single-quarter rushing effort of the season. Scobey posted 78 yards on the ground in the first quarter of last week's win over Kansas and a career-high 204 yards overall. Today he went on to rush for 172 yards (second most in his career) on a career-high 32 carries. It was the fifth 100-yard rushing game of the season and seventh of his career (tied for third on the KSU career chart). In addition, Scobey's 172-yard effort is tied for 16th on the K-State single-game rushing chart.
Scobey set the school record for career rushing touchdowns (27) with his two scores today. He passed Jonathan Beasley (1996-97, 1999-2000) and Eric Hickson (1994-95, 1997-98), who each had 26, for the top spot on that list. In fact, Scobey has averaged 1.29 touchdowns per game in his 21-game Wildcat career. The senior becomes the second Wildcat player (J.J. Smith, 1991-94) to rush for 10 or more touchdowns in a season twice. Scobey now has 11 rushing TDs this season after rushing for 16 in 2000.
Scobey continues to move up on the KSU single-season and career charts. He jumped from ninth to seventh on the career rushing list (1,634 yards) and is now sixth on the single-season rushing list (916 yards) after entering the game out of the top 10.
With his 172-yard, two-touchdown performance today, Scobey has posted 321 yards (160.5 ypg) and six TDs in his two-career games vs. Iowa State.
With his 35-yard first-quarter touchdown reception, WR Ricky Lloyd took over the team lead with three TD catches. Lloyd has now caught a pass in six straight games and is averaging 40.7 yards per TD reception.
QB Ell Roberson rushed for a career-high 131 yards on 22 carries. That gave the Wildcats two 100-yard rushers on the day. It marked the second time this season that Roberson and Scobey went for 100 yards in the same game (also USC) and the sixth time in school history that feat was performed.
LB Ben Leber and WR Aaron Lockett made their team-leading 15th-straight start today.
DB Derrick Yates intercepted his first career pass in the first quarter.
LB Josh Buhl posted his first career sack today, while CB Bobby Walker picked off his first career pass.
