EA Sports Holds Off Wildcats' Rally

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Mike Elliott scored 26 points and backcourt mate Fred Vinson added 19 to lift the EA Sports All-Stars to a 91-81 victory over Kansas State in a men's college basketball exhibition game played Thursday at Bramlage Coliseum.
Matt Siebrandt led five Kansas State players in double figures with 17 points, while Tim Ellis added 15 points off the bench. Frank Richards had 13 points and a game-high 10 assists, while Pervis Pasco and Jarrett Hart scored 10 points apiece for the Wildcats.
Elliott, who played collegiately at Montana State, hit 5 of 10 three-pointers for EA Sports, which canned 14 of 29 in the game from behind the arc. Vinson, a guard who played at Georgia Tech, also had five three-pointers for the winners.
Bennett Davidson finished with 13 points, Damien Cantrell scored a dozen and Billy Knight finished with 10 points for EA Sports.
"I thought we came back and played pretty well," said K-State head coach Jim Wooldridge. "We still made some mistakes that were costly when you try to come back in a game. Every possession is pretty critical so any mistake is tougher to overcome. But I'm not discouraged at all with what I saw out there tonight.
"I thought we played pretty well in the second half. It was a difficult start, but I don't know if that was a big surprise."
The All-Stars led throughout the game, pulling to a 20-10 edge midway through the first half. The lead grew to as much as 22 points, at 39-17 with 6:37 left, before Kansas State rallied within 46-32 at halftime. Elliot hit four three-pointers en route to 14 first-half points for EA Sports.
EA Sports led 68-56 with 10:21 left before the Wildcats went on a run. A three-pointer by Ellis brought K-State within 72-68 with 6:54 remaining. That was the closest the hosts would get, however, as Elliott hit a basket and Vinson buried a pair of three-pointers to push the lead back to 10 with 2:53 left.
K-State's Marques Hayden finished with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds in his collegiate debut. The Wildcats finished with a 41-34 edge on the boards.
Hart had nine assists for the Wildcats, who hit 53 percent from the floor in the game.Elliott also had nine assists to lead EA Sports.
Kansas State plays its second game of the exhibition season on Nov. 13, when it hosts Athletes First. The Wildcats open the 2002-03 regular season at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, on Nov. 23 against BYU.
