GREEN BAY, Wis. - Frank Richards scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, but its wasn't enough to get the Wildcats over the hump as Kansas State was edged, 68-64, by Wisconsin-Green Bay at the Resch Center Saturday night.
The loss was the fourth on the season by fewer than 10 points for K-State (2-4), which had more field goals and rebounds than the Phoenix, but was outscored at the free throw line, 23-6.
Matt Rohde scored 20 points and Brandon Hansen added 12, all on 3-pointers, to pace UW-Green Bay (3-3). The Phoenix also got 11 points from reserve forward Kevin Hughes, who shot 9-for-10 from the free throw line and collected a team-high nine rebounds.
Kansas State led by 25-21 following a 3-pointer by Schyler Thomas with 3:37 to play in the first half. But Rohde drilled back-to-back treys on UWGB's next two possessions and Terry Parker added layup as the Phoenix closed the period with an 8-0 run for a 29-25 lead at intermission.
Richards keyed a 6-0 run early in the second half, sandwiching a 3-pointer and a layup around a Marques Hayden free throw, to put the Cats on top 38-37 with 14:01 remaining. It was the last time K-State would lead as UWGB responded with a 7-0 spurt of its own for a 44-38 edge less than two minutes later.
Kansas State would pull within a bucket on six occasions over the final 10 minutes, the last time at the 1:09 mark on a Richards jumper in the lane, but were never able to take the lead.
Gilson DeJesus scored seven points and paced the Wildcats on the glass with a career-high nine rebounds as K-State outboarded its fourth straight opponent, 35-34. Jarrett Hart added eight points, while Tim Ellis and Pervis Pasco each chipped in with seven.
Kansas State returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. when the Wildcats host Texas-Pan American at Bramlage Coliseum.
