EMPORIA, Kan. - Sophomore Craig Smith set a Kansas State school record and automatically qualified for the upcoming NCAA Outdoor National Championships with his winning throw in the men's javelin Saturday at the ATG Sports / Emporia Twilight Qualifier track and field meet at Emporia State University.
K-State junior Rebekah Green won the women's discus at 166-11 and later captured the shot put at 53-11.75. Her discus mark was a career-best by more than four feet and hit the provisional-qualifying standard of 164-0. Green won the shot put by more than eight feet over Kara Brockmeier of Emporia State, posting a season-best and improving her NCAA automatic mark.
Smith, a native of Hutchinson Kan., had a mark of 237 feet, 8 inches to win the javelin. His winning throw came in the fifth round and earned him the victory over John Hetzendorf, an unattached athlete who had taken the lead on the second round with a throw of 231-9.
Smith became the first K-State male athlete to hit an automatic-qualifying mark this season. His throw was 23 feet past his previous season-best, and broke the previous school record of 232-7 set in 1995 by T.J. Turner. Smith's mark was the ninth-best this season in the NCAA based on marks coming into this weekend.
Also Saturday, Teena Clincy of Kansas State earned a first in the women's triple jump and a second in the 100-meter hurdles. Clincy had a wind-aided mark of 40-11.50 in the triple jump to win by more than a foot over Emporia State's Emilee Hamlin. The Wildcat senior later went 13.65 in the 100 hurdles to earn a personal record and remain in second place on the K-State all-time list in the event.
Kansas State will compete next Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the Big 12 Conference Outdoor Championships at the University of Missouri.
