Women's Basketball Team Finishes In Top 10 In Attendance

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State women's basketball team finished in the Top 10 on the final Division I NCAA attendance list and made the largest average increase in attendance from the previous year, according to the June 24 NCAA News.
K-State finished seventh in attendance, the highest ranking the Wildcats have received in their 34 years of competition, with an average of 8,158 fans per game. KSU had 122,376 fans attend 15 games at Bramlage Coliseum last season. Tennessee topped the list, averaging 14,295 fans. Texas Tech was second (12,545) followed by Connecticut (11,907), Iowa State (10,296), New Mexico (9,229) and Purdue (8,377).
Kansas State also was ranked in the Top 10 in attendance for all games. The 'Cats were sixth having 211,738 fans attend 34 contests this past season. Connecticut was first (390,264/39 gm) followed by Tennessee (370,718/34 gm), Oklahoma (271,542/36 gm), Purdue (233,886/30 gm) and Iowa State (231,562/33 gm).
The Wildcats' jump of an average of 4,734 fans per game topped the list of 10 teams that increased their attendances from 2000-2001. Kansas State drew 8,158 fans per game in 2001-2002 compared to 3,424 in 2000-2001. Oklahoma (3rd, +2,240) and Baylor (5th, +1,565) were also among the Top 10.
The Big 12 Conference surpassed the one million mark for the first time in women's conference history to capture the national attendance crown. The conference teams drew a NCAA all-time national high of 1,002,251 fans to 188 games and averaged a NCAA record 5,331 fans per game. The Big 12 is the only conference to exceed the 5,000-game mark (the league also had 5,030 in 2000-2001). The Big Ten was second (4,440/gm) followed by the SEC (3,501/gm), Big East (2,970/gm) and the Mountain West (2,599/gm).
Overall, Division I institutions home attendances were up 432,325 fans. The 322 institutions totaled a record 6,502,159 fans in home attendances and set a per-game record of 1,541.
