SCARBOROUGH, N.Y - Kansas State's Christine Boucher is making some noise in the 102nd U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at the 6,190-yard, par-71 course at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club.
Boucher, a native of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, qualified for one of 64 match-play spots by firing back-to-back rounds of 75 during stoke-play competition Monday and Tuesday.
Things got even better for the Wildcat junior-to-be on Wednesday as Boucher advanced to the Round of 16 with come-from-behind wins over UCLA's Yvonne Choe and Vanderbilt's Sarah Jacobs.
Boucher trailed Choe, the Pacific-10 Conference Newcomer of the Year, for the first 11 holes before heating up down the stretch. Bogies by Choe on 11 and 12 helped Boucher to pull even. The K-State standout then knocked in birdies on three of the last five holes of the match to advance 2 and 1.
Boucher made an even more dramatic comeback during the afternoon session. Trailing Jacobs by four holes after No. 6, the K-Stater caught fire, winning holes 7, 8, 9 and 10 to square the match. She then played even par the rest of the way, winning 11, 12 and 15 for the 3-and-2 victory.
Next up for Boucher is former Michigan State golfer Emily Bastel, who recently competed in the U.S. Women's Open in Hutchinson, Kan. The pair tees off at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club at 7:40 a.m. (EST). Should Boucher get past Bastel, she would advance to Thursday afternoon's quarterfinals. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday with a 36-hole final slated for Saturday.
Boucher led the K-State women's golf team to the NCAA Central Regional in East Lansing, Mich., in 2002. The junior-to-be had a team best 75.87 scoring average in 2002, and led the Wildcats in top 20 finishes with 10. Boucher finished second at the 2002 Big 12 Championship with a season-best score of 224, including a season-low 71 during the second round.
