MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State's Jared MacLeod set new meet, field house, and school records with his performance in the 60-meter hurdles Saturday afternoon at the KSU Invitational. MacLeod ran a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7.80 seconds in the event, just .06 off of the automatic qualifying mark.
"Jared's hurdle race was outstanding," said Kansas State track and field coach Cliff Rovelto. "It was a school record and a provisional qualifying mark, but it is a time that would normally get into the NCAA meet. For him to do that this early is very special."
MacLeod's mark broke a school record set by Travis Livingston at the Husker Invitational in 1997. Anson Jackson of Kansas was the runner-up in the hurdles and also managed to hit the provisional qualifying mark with 7.95.
Kansas State dominated the throwing events, sweeping the weight throw 1-4 and the shot put 1-3. Combined, the Wildcats scored 52 of 144 team points in the two throwing events.
However, the 144 points was only good enough for second place as Kansas edged K-State by nine. Finishing out the team race, Emporia State grabbed third with 71 points, followed by Oklahoma State with 56 and Southern Methodist with 25, which only participated in three events.
In the weight throw Coby Cost of Kansas State hit the provisional qualifying mark with a toss of 64 feet, 2.5 inches, which improved his season best by over a foot. Three K-Stater's, Tarl Vetter (62-6.75), Adam Walker (58-6.5), and Ty Kane (57-6.25) finished 2-3-4 to sweep the event.
The other champions for Kansas State were Will Rogers in the 200 meters with a time of 22.51 and Nick Long in the shot put with a mark of 48-6.25. The 4x400-meter relay team also finished first, four seconds ahead of second place Kansas with a clocking of 3:16.86.
Kansas led the way winning seven of the 16 events, including a sweep of the 60 meters, with Leo Bookman and Mike Walker crossing the finish in 6.91 and 6.97, respectively. Bookman's mark was only .07 off the meet record.
Kansas also won a jump off in the high jump with T. J. Hackler edging out Charlie Robben from Kansas State at 6-11. Kyle Lancaster of Kansas State also cleared the 6-11 mark, but was not included in the jump off due to his number of prior misses, and finished third.
Emporia State's lone champion was Justin Stigge with a time of 1:12.76 in the 400-yard run.
Southern Methodist made a splash with its second of three events for the day, the 1,000 meters. Dalibor Balgac and Lukas Musil finished 1-2 for the Mustangs, with Balgac's time of 2:25.96 setting a new invitational record. He surpassed the old mark of 2:27.0 set by Anthony Williams of Butler County in 1990.
Kansas State's next action is January 17-18, when it hosts the Wildcat Pentathlon/Heptathlon and the Wildcat Invitational at Ahearn Field House.
