Hart Hits Game-Winning 3-Pointer, as K-State Survives Gardner-Webb, 68-65

Nov 29, 2003 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Jarrett Hart took a late charge and then hit a 3-pointer with one-tenth of a second left to give Kansas State a 68-65 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday night.

Hart's 14 points led the Wildcats, who held off a second-half rally to earn their first 3-0 start in five years.

The Bulldogs (1-3) trailed 39-26 at the break but opened the second half with a 10-0 run and continued to gain ground on Kansas State down the stretch.

Hart hit a free throw with 4:03 left and a jumper 27 seconds later for a 64-59 lead, but two straight baskets by Simon Conn put Gardner-Webb up 65-64 with 2:11 to go.

Marques Hayden hit the front end of a two-shot foul with 1:39 left to tie it at 65, and the Wildcats got the ball back for their game-winning possession when Hart took a charge from Andre Manning with 16 seconds remaining.

Tim Ellis had 13 points and Dez Willingham scored 10 for Kansas State, which got 12 rebounds each from Hayden and Justin Williams.

Chris Gash led Gardner-Webb with 16 points. Brian Bender added 12 points and Chris Wiggins scored 11 for the Bulldogs, who were 9-for-32 from 3-point range.
