NORMAN, Okla. - Kansas State freshman Coby Cost extended his string of record-setting wins in the men's weight throw to four straight weeks with his victory Saturday at the J.D. Martin Invitational indoor track and field meet hosted by the University of Oklahoma.
Cost won the event in 68 feet, 3.75 inches to improve the Wildcats' school record for the third consecutive week. His old mark of 67-11.50 was set last weekend when K-State won a triangular meet at Kansas with Missouri. Three weeks ago, the school record was 64-4.
Teammate Adam Walker was second in that event at 63-7.75, just missing an NCAA provisional mark but adding nearly two feet to his previous indoor personal record of 61-8.50 and moving into third on the Wildcats' all-time list.
Kansas State athletes won five other events in the meet, including the women's mile relay in 3:48.89.
Lysaira Roman-Del Valle shaved seven seconds off the previous meet record in the women's 800 meters, winning the event in 2:09.10. The old mark of 2:16.50 was set in 2001 by Miriam Masekova. Roman-Del Valle, who hit an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark, won by three seconds over Aisha Stringer of Oklahoma.
Rebekah Green also set a meet record with a victory in the women's shot put. Green, who has won each of the last four weeks, won at 55-2.75, snapping the old record of 54-8 by Ashley Dorsey of Texas-Arlington set last year.
Chaytan Hill of K-State had the best mark by a Wildcat this year with her second-place finish in the triple jump at 42-2.75, a mark which improved her standing on the list of provisional qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor.
On the men's side, freshman Christian Smith won the men's 800 in 1:52.36, the fastest 800 run by a Wildcat this season. Smith's previous season-best was a 1:54.06 run last weekend at Kansas. Kelly Chance of K-State was fifth in 1:59.43.
Freshman Kyle Lancaster added a half-inch to his previous season best to win the men's high jump at 6-11.50. He had fewer misses at that height than Einar Hjartarson of SMU to earn the win and break the old meet record of 6-9.75 set in 2001 by Tulsa's Jason Kruege. Mike Kizinkewich of K-State was third at 6-9.50 in his third meet with the ?Cats since transferring from the University of Manitoba.
Stelios Kapsalis, a Wildcat transfer from Cyprus, improved his season-best indoors in the triple jump to 49-0.75 with his second-place finish behind Jamoiy Bryant of Barton County CC, who won in a meet-record 50-10.
Former Wildcat wide receiver Brandon Solt moved into ninth on the K-State all-time list in the men's 60-meter hurdles, running 8.50 seconds on Saturday.
Kansas State competes next week at the Midwest Classic at Nebraska, running on the same Devaney Center track where the Big 12 Conference Indoor Championships will be held in late February. Kansas State returns home for the Wildcat Power Classic on Feb. 14 and 15.
