Mar 12, 2003 | Women's Basketball
March 12, 2003
* Kansas State started junior Nicole Ohlde and sophomores Laurie Koehn, Chelsea Domenico, Megan Mahoney and Kendra Wecker. That lineup has now started seven times this season, in two straight games and has a 6-1 record. Ohlde has started 89 straight games, while Megan Mahoney and Kendra Wecker have started all 65 games in their careers.
* With the victory, Kansas State tied the school record for most wins in a season with 28. The Wildcats were 28-6 in 1975-76. Also with the victory, Head Coach Deb Patterson tied Lynn Hickey (1979-84) for second on the all-time coaching victories list, moving to 125-86. Judy Akers is No. 1 on that list, having gone 206-94 from 1968-79.
* Kansas State is 25-0 when leading at halftime this season. The last time the Wildcats allowed an opponent less than 20 points in an opening half in a Big 12 Tourney game was in a 1999 first-round game vs. Colorado. The Lady Buffs trailed 34-17 at halftime en route to a 55-51 Wildcat victory.
* It marked the 7th time K-State has held an opponent under 20 points in the first half this season and the 12th time K-State held an opponent under 20 in either half. The last time K-State held an opponent to 20 percent shooting or less this season was 1/11/03 vs. Colorado, when the Buffs shot .172 percent from the floor. K-State went on to win that game 61-36 in Manhattan.
* K-State set a team record for blocks in a Big 12 Tournament game with 10. The five in the first half matched the previous school record set against Colorado in the 1997 final and against Oklahoma in the 2002 semifinal.
* Following the win, the Wildcats are now 10-1 in their last 11 games and 23-2 in their last 25 outings. Kansas State is attempting to reach the Big 12 semifinals for the second straight year. The Wildcats defeated Texas, 79-63, in last year's quarters before losing in the semis to top-seeded Oklahoma, 69-49.
* The last time K-State won two games at a Big 12 Tournament was in 1997 when the 'Cats defeated Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Kansas en route to a loss to Colorado in the final.
* K-State had a string of nine straight games snapped in which it outrebounded an opponent. Baylor's 55 boards were the most by a Wildcat opponent this year (previous, 42, vs. Georgia Tech, 11/17/02). Still, the Wildcats' 45 rebounds tied the most by a K-State team in a Big 12 Tournament game, last set in a first-round game vs. Colorado in 1999.
* K-State tied the team record for most three-pointers in a Big 12 Tournament game with 10 (vs. Texas in the 2002 quarters) and set the 3-point attempts record with 22, breaking the 20 attempted in that game last year with the Longhorns.
NICOLE OHLDE
* Has scored in double figures in 35 straight games, including all 31 this season.
* Ohlde matched her season-high with five blocks, equalling the five she had at Colorado. Her four blocks in the first half marked her sixth game this season with at least four blocked shots. In the last three games, including tonight, Ohlde has had 12 blocked shots. Ohlde now has 62 blocked shots on the season, and ranks second on the single-season list behind her own 69 set last year.
* Ohlde's four blocks at halftime set the Wildcats' school record for blocks in a Big 12 Tournament game. Andria Jones had three blocks in the 1997 final vs. Colorado.
* Ohlde moved from 8th to 7th on the single-season scoring list, with her 14 points giving her 575 for the year. She needs eight points to catch Priscilla Gary (1983-84).
KENDRA WECKER
* Has scored in double figures in 44 consecutive games, encompassing all 31 games this season.
* Wecker moved from 7th to 4th on the single-season scoring list after finishing with 15 points. She now has 595 and trails Laurie Koehn's 600 from last season.
LAURIE KOEHN
* Her double-figure scoring game was her 13th this season and the 40th of her 55-game career.
* Her 20-point game was the fifth of the season and her first since scoring 33 against Iowa on 1/5/03.
* She led the Wildcats in scoring for the fourth time this season.
* Koehn set the Wildcats' school record for three-pointers in a Big 12 Tournament game with six. The previous mark was held by Kristin Rethman, who hit five against Oklahoma State in the first round in 2000. It was the first time Koehn hit five three-pointers in a game since going 10-for-13 from behind the arc against Iowa on 1/5/03. She also broke her own record in Big 12 Tourney games for 3-point attempts, with her 12 tonight surpassing her 11 from last year's semifinal vs. Oklahoma.
MEGAN MAHONEY
* Had her 21st double-figure scoring game of the season tonight and her fifth in the last six games. In the last six games, she has scored 103 points.
CHELSEA DOMENICO
* Her eight assists tied her career and season-highs, set against Temple, 11/29/02. Domenico had seven rebounds, surpassing her season and career-highs.
* Posted her 8th career game with at least five assists. It marked the fifth time this season she led the Wildcats in assists.
