Miami, Fla. - Stony Brook pitchers Will Brumfield and Stephen Zydor combined to hold Kansas State to just two runs on five hits, while outfielder Kevin Solano had a team-best five RBIs, as the Seawolves defeated the Wildcats, 10-2, on Monday afternoon at FIU's University Park.
The game was a make-up of a game suspended by rain on Saturday evening.
With the win, Stony Brook ran its winning streak to four games and improved to 4-2 on the season, while Kansas State fell to 9-7 overall with the loss. A day after posting season-highs for both runs scored and hits in the 17-5 victory over Florida International, the Wildcats were held to season-lows in both categories against the Seawolves with just two runs on five hits.
Stony Brook jumped on the board quickly, as the first three batters reached base in the first inning on back-to-back singles and a walk. With the bases loaded and no outs, designated hitter Matt Devins popped up to the shortstop to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, outfielder Isidro Fortuna connected on a single to left field with one out then moved to third base on a wild pitch and an error by the shortstop. Fortuna scored on a wild pitch on the next at-bat to push the advantage to 2-0. First baseman Mike Russo was hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning then moved all the way home on a double by outfielder Andrew Larsen and a ground out by Solano for a 3-0 lead.
Stony Brook broke the game wide open in the fourth inning, as consecutive batters reached base on a hit by pitch, error and walk to again load the bases. After a pitching change and a strikeout, Solano drilled the first pitch over the fence in left field to stretch the lead to 7-0.
Kansas State finally broke the scoreless streak in the bottom of the fourth inning, as sophomore outfielder Terry Blunt led off the inning with a walk followed by junior third baseman Ty Soto's single past the third baseman. After a ground out to move the runners to second and third, senior outfielder Pat Maloney doubled down the right field line to plate both runners and close the gap to 7-2.
However, Stony Brook added two more runs in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Russo and one in the seventh on shortstop Garrett Renner's RBI single to right field to conclude the scoring.
Solano paced the Stony Brook attack with his 2-for-5 afternoon with team-high five RBIs and one run scored, while Russo scored a team-best three runs scored and one RBI on a 1-for-3 effort.
Maloney was the lone Wildcat to have more than one hit, as the Overland Park, Kan., native extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 2-for-4 performance with team-high two RBIs. Maloney, who did not start for the first time in 143 games in last night's win over Saint Peter's, has now reached base in an amazing 48 straight games dating back to a doubleheader with Oklahoma State on March 23, 2002.
Brumfield moved to 2-0 on the season with the win for Stony Brook, as he allowed just two runs on four hits in seven innings of work with five strikeouts and four walks. Zydor held the Wildcats scoreless for the last two innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Jared Bunn (1-2) was tagged with the loss for Kansas State, as he allowed six runs (only two earned) on four hits in 3-1/3 innings pitched with five walks and two strikeouts. Junior right-handed pitcher Andrew Ehling pitched a career-high 5-2/3 innings of relief to finish the game, allowing four runs (only three earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Kansas State continues action at the Papa John's Challenge later today, as the Wildcats play Rider at the Homestead Sports Complex at 6 p.m.
