Errors Doom K-State In 9-5 Loss To SE Missouri State

Manhattan, Kan. - Senior outfielder Brian Hopkins went 3-for-4 with a team-high three RBIs and four runs scored, as Southeast Missouri took advantage of a season-high six Kansas State errors to post a 9-5 victory over the Wildcats on Tuesday evening at Tointon Family Stadium.
With the win, Southeast Missouri State improved to 20-13 on the season, while Kansas State dropped to 12-26 overall with the loss.
Southeast Missouri State jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, as the Indians plated a run on one hit and one error. Hopkins led off the scoring with a one-out double down the left-field line then moved to third base on an error on the next at-bat. With runners on the corners, senior shortstop Zach Borowiak flied out to center field to plate Hopkins.
Kansas State tied the score at 1-all in the bottom of the second inning, as senior first baseman Tim Doty scored from third base on a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Brett Williams. Doty led off the inning with a single to right field then moved to third on a single by senior catcher Ryan Baldwin and a stolen base.
The Indians responded with two runs on three hits in the top of the third inning to break the tie. Senior second baseman Justin Christian had a RBI single with runners on first and third base, while senior catcher Tristen McDonald grounded out with runners of second and third.
Kansas State closed to within 3-2 with a run on two hits in the fourth inning, as Doty doubled down the right field line then moved around to score on a wild pitch and a RBI single by Williams.
Southeast Missouri pushed the lead to 4-2 with a single run in the top of the fifth inning then pushed the game out of reach with a three-run sixth inning that was highlighted by a three-run home run by Hopkins to left field.
Kansas State salvaged a run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Doty to cut the advantage to 7-3. However, the teams scored two runs apiece in the eighth inning to complete the scoring. The Indians had just one hit in the eighth inning, but took advantage of three Wildcat errors to score two runs. K-State's two runs were more dramatic, as junior second baseman Marc Chabot reached base by being hit by a pitch followed by senior outfielder Pat Maloney's two-run home run to left-center field. The home run was the 31st of Maloney's career, giving him third place on the all-time list and moving him to just six back of career leader Scott Poepard (37, 1994-97).
Hopkins led the Indians with his 3-for-4 effort with three RBIs and four runs scored, while Christian and Gilbert added two hits apiece.
Maloney, Doty and Baldwin each tallied two hits to pace the Wildcats offensively, while Williams added a team-best two RBIs.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ryan Forsyth moved to 3-0 on the season in gaining the win for Southeast Missouri State, as he allowed just two runs on six hits in the minimum five innings pitched with one strikeout and two walks.
Junior right-handed pitcher Andrew Ehling (1-1) took the loss in his first start of the season, as he allowed three earned runs (four total) on eight hits in a season-best five innings pitched with three strikeouts.
Kansas State concludes its brief two-game series with Southeast Missouri on Wednesday with first pitch set for 3 p.m. at Tointon Stadium.
