SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Kansas State's varsity eight finished sixth in its heat, with rough water, a strong cross wind and even tougher competition Saturday morning at the San Diego Crew Classic being held on Mission Bay.
The heat was won by California, which covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:54.24, and edged out the defending national champion varsity eight, Washington, by seven-tenths of a second. Kansas State finished only 30 seconds behind the first-place Bears at 7:24.89. This was the Wildcats' first attempt at the coveted Jessop-Whittier Cup, a step up in competition from the Cal Cup it contested for the last two years.
"The varsity was obviously racing in a much more competitive event than they have ever raced in," said Wildcat coach Jenny Hale.
In the women's JV division, the Wildcat second varsity eight also advanced to the petite final with a third-place finish in its heat. The heat was won by Southern California in 7:35.8, a solid 10 seconds ahead of Minnesota and 22 seconds in front of the Wildcats, which finished in 7:57.96.
"I think in the 2V race we had an excellent start and a very good 500," Hale said. "We just didn't do a good job of going stroke-for-stroke with Minnesota and let them go."
The varsity eight will compete Sunday afternoon in the Jessop-Whittier petite final at 1:40 p.m. against Texas, Tennessee, Duke, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The women's JV petite final is scheduled for 12:20 p.m. with K-State's second varsity eight to battle Texas, Oregon State, Clemson, Massachusetts and Sacramento State.
Following Sunday's races, K-State travels to Washington, D.C., Saturday, April 12, to participate in the George Washington Invitational Crew Classic on the Potomac River. SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC SATURDAY'S RESULTS
