LINCOLN, Neb. - The Kansas State women's golf team shot a combined 313 during the morning session before rebounding with a solid afternoon round of 300 to wrap up the opening day of play at the 2003 NCAA Women's Central Regional Golf Championships in 12th place.
The Wildcats, who are looking to advance to their first NCAA Championships, head into Saturday's third and final round at the par-71, 6,033-yard Firethorn Golf Club just four strokes behind eighth-place Wisconsin, which finished today's 36 holes with a combined score of 609 and currently holds the final qualifying position.
"I was really proud of how the team hung in there today and battled for every stroke," said K-State coach Kristi Knight, who has guided the Wildcats to 15th-place finishes in each of the last two regionals. "We are in a better position (at regionals) than we've ever been before. We're in the hunt for a spot in the Championships and at this stage that's quite an accomplishment."
California and Kent State were the only teams to turn in sub-300 team scores during both of Friday's rounds. The Golden Bears sit atop the team leaderboard with a combined scored of 584. Kent State is second at 595, with Texas and Texas A&M tied for third at 605.
Junior Christine Boucher, tied for fourth with a 36-hole score of 145, once again led the Wildcats. The first team All-Big 12 selection followed up an opening-round 2-over 73 with an afternoon round of 1-over 72.
Senior Miranda Smith, whose second-round 2-under 69 was the afternoon session's low score and equaled the best total of the day, jumped all the way from 48th to 12th after getting out to a slow start during the opening 18 holes and shooting 8-over 79.
"We had a couple of nice scores this afternoon," Knight said. " It would have been nice to have a couple more, but the rest of the team hung tough and did the best they could."
Sophomore Sarah Heffel was the Wildcat's next best finisher, shooting 79-80-159 to stand tied for 68th. Sophomore Stephanie Limoges shot 83-79-162 and is tied for 84th, while junior Karen Quintelier shot 82-81-163 and is tied for 88th.
The third and final round of the 2003 NCAA Women's Central Regional Golf Championships tees off from the Firethorn Golf Club at 7 a.m. Fans interested in keeping up with the scoring live via the Internet may do so at www.golfstat.com.
