Peete, Hayden lead K-State to 88-69 win over Pittsburg State

MANHATTAN - Kansas State junior forward Marques Hayden recorded a double-double and sophomore guard Fred Peete scored 20 points off the bench as the Wildcats defeated Pittsburg State, 88-69 in exhibtion men's basketball at Bramlage Coliseum. Four Wildcats reached double figures as K-State completed exhibtion play on Thursday night.
The Gorillas hung with the Wildcats in the early going, as Kansas State held just a two point lead, 35-33, at the 3:19 mark of the first half. The Wildcats stretched the advantage to six before the first half buzzer on Peete layup for a 46-40 lead. Peete and senior foward Jeremiah Massey paced Kansas State with 15 points and six rebounds apiece in the half. Leading Pittsburg State in first half scoring was Eddie Jackson with 16.
Kansas State opened the second half with an 11-0 run, punctuated by an alley-oop dunk by sophomore guard Lance Harris, expanding the K-State lead to 57-40. Pittsburg State managed to claw back into the game, cutting the lead to 10 at 13:09 on a three-point basket by Marvis Peebles.
The Wildcats then pushed the margin back to 17 on a layup by Hayden at 11:27. The Putnam City, Okla., native scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half and grabbed seven of his 12 total rebounds in the half. Kansas State eventaully pushed the lead to a game-high 24 on a Clent Stewart layup with 3:41 to play in the contest.
Wildcats in double figures were Peete with a game-high 20 points, Massey with 17, Hayden with 12 and Stewart with 11. Leading Kansas State on the glass was Hayden with 12, Massey with nine and Harris and Peete six.
Pittsburg State was led by three players in double figures, Jackson with 16, Peebles with 11 and Jason Taylor with 11. Leading rebounder for the Gorillas was Kiquan Sullivan with four.
Kansas State outrebounded the Gorillas, 48-30 including 19 offensive rebounds. The Wildcats converted 50 percent of their shots, compared to 39.7 for Pittsburg State. The Wildcats also managed nine steals, including three by Cartier Martin.
Kansas State will begin regular season non-conference play on November 19 at 8:30 p.m. against North Dakota State in Bramlage Coliseum.
