MANHATTAN - Kansas State track and field has announced the signing of three athletes for the 2005-06 season: Sara Callier of Portland, Ore., Adam Fretwell of Houston, Texas and Kayla Smith of Concordia, Kan. The Wildcats have now signed seven athletes for next season.
Callier, who competes for Benson Polytechnic High, ranks among the national leaders in the girl’s triple jump with a personal-best leap of 39-05.00. Callier has also recorded personal bests in the 100-meter dash (12.01) and 200-meter dash (24.60).
“Sara is tall and very athletic with what we feel is a tremendous upside in the triple jump,” said head coach Cliff Rovelto.
Fretwell enters K-State as an accomplished decathlete, recording 7,045 points at the Junior International level, ranking him third in the nation last year. The Cypress Creek High product was named a 2004 Verizon Junior All-American and is the Texas high school record holder in the decathlon with 7,260 points. This total would place Fretwell in seventh on K-State’s current top ten decathlon scores in school history. Fretwell also placed third in the long jump at the Texas state high school meet.
“Adam is the number one-ranked returning high school decathlete in the United States,” said Rovelto. “He is an outstanding student with a tremendous work ethic and will be a great addition to our program.”
Smith comes to K-State as the 2004 Kansas High School State 4A champion in the shot put. The Concordia High product has recorded a personal best in the shot put of 45-00.00 at the 2004 Concordia Invite and had the 15th best shot put in the nation in 2004.
“Kayla is an explosive athlete with a good training background, which should make for an easy transition into our program, “ said assistant coach/throws Steve Fritz.
In addition to the three athletes listed above, K-State has signed Jana Gwinn of Overland Park, Kan.; Marianne Schlachter of Birndorf Germany; Scott Sellers of Cinco Ranch, Texas and Breanna Yost of Montezuma, Kan. The seven additions will all enter as freshmen.
