Ohlde, Wecker Named AP All-Americans

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State senior center Nicole Ohlde and junior forward Kendra Wecker became the first women’s basketball players in school history to repeat as All-Americans, as the duo was named to the Associated Press All-America team on Tuesday.

Ohlde becomes Kansas State’s first two-time first team AP All-American after earning the honor in 2003. Overall, she was selected for the honor for the third time in her career after being named an honorable mention selection in 2002.

Wecker was elected to the third team for second straight year.

Kansas State was the only school in the country to have two players selected to the 15-member team.

Ohlde was joined on the first team by Duke’s Alana Beard, Connecticut’s Diana Taurasi, Penn State’s Kelly Mazzante and Stanford’s Nicole Powell.

Beard was a first-team choice on all 47 ballots from the national media panel that votes on the weekly Top 25, receiving the maximum 235 points. Each voter picked three teams, and players received points on a 5-3-1 basis.

Taurasi had 45 first-team votes and 231 points, Mazzante had 36 and 207, while Powell had 25 and 183. Ohlde received 24 first-team votes and 172 points.

The five first-teamers, all seniors, were on the preseason All-America team in November. Taurasi, Ohlde and Mazzante were on the first team with Beard at the end of last season, while Powell was a second-team pick. In 2002, Beard made the first team; Powell, Taurasi and Mazzante were on the second team, and Ohlde received honorable mention. Beard received honorable mention as freshman in 2001.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment and recognition for Nicole," said head coach Deb Patterson. "To be named a two-time AP All-American is a tremendous achievement."

A 6-foot-5 senior from Clay Center, Kan., Ohlde is the most decorated player in Kansas State women’s basketball history. The two-time reigning Big 12 Conference Player of the Year and a three-time first team all-conference pick, she is the school’s all-time leading scorer (men’s or women’s) with 2,218 points and the all-time leading rebounder with 989 boards going into tonight’s NCAA Tournament game with Minnesota. Ohlde became the Big 12 Conference’s all-time leading scorer on March 11.

This season, Ohlde is averaging 17.3 points per game on 57.6 percent shooting with 6.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.7 blocks. She is the only player in school history to post 2,000 points, 900 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 blocks in a career.

"I am honored and very appreciative of being named to the team," said Ohlde. "It is definitely a tribute to the teammates that I have and all the things they do for me. And, a tribute to our coaches who are constantly in the gym trying to help us all get better. There are a lot of tremendous players in the country, so I definitely feel honored to be named among them."

A 5-foot-11 junior from Marysville, Kan., Wecker was selected for All-American honors for the third time in her career after earning third team honors for the second consecutive season from the AP. She ranks third all-time in school history with 1,716 career points and second in career double-doubles (35) going into the Minnesota game. A two-time first team all-conference selection, Wecker became the second-fastest Wildcat to score 1,500 career points when she scored 23 against Colorado on Feb. 8, 2004.

This season, Wecker is averaging 17.1 points per game on 49.7 percent shooting with 8.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.9 steals and 0.7 blocks.
