Seven K-State Athletes Receives Invitations to the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championship
Mar 09, 2004 | Track & Field
Leading the way for the Wildcats into the meet are the women high jumpers. One automatic qualifier, Morgan High, and two provisional qualifiers, Marta Borkowska and Janelle Wright were invited to the meet. High qualified with a jump of 6-00.75 at the MU-KU-KSU Triangular back on Jan. 23. Her leap currently ranks fourth among collegian athletes this season. Borkowska is entering the meet after her best jump of 5-11.50, which also occurred at the MU-KU-KSU Triangular. Although she did not gain an automatic qualification, her bound is tied for second among provisional participants in the event.
Wright was accepted into the meet for two events. During the high jump portion of the Carol Robinson Winter Pentathlon, she jumped to a provisional mark of 5-10.75, which was good enough to put her in the NCAA Championship. She reached qualification status in the pentathlon after her victory in the Big 12 Championship, recording 4,041 points. The point total is the fifth highest for Division 1 athletes this season.
Other invitations were sent out to Kyle Lancaster in the men's high jump, Christian Smith in the men's 800 meter run, Chaytan Hill in the women's triple jump, and Rebekah Green in the women's shot put.
Lancaster, who is ranked as the second highest jumper this season in the NCAA, returns to the Championships after a bound of 7-05.00 at the KSU All-Comers Meet on Dec. 12. He has placed first in six out of seven meets.
Smith qualified for the NCAA Championships, missing the school record in the men's 800 meter run by half a second at 1:47.91. His time is sixth best by a Division 1 athlete this season.
Hill gained two automatic qualifying leaps and a school record this year in the women's triple jump. Her best leap of 44-09.50 at the Big 12 Championship ranks as the second best jump in Division 1 this season and the best in K-State history.
Green gained Championship status when she heaved a 56-04.50 throw in the shot put at the KSU Open on Feb. 21. Her throw ranks her fifth among Division 1 athletes.
The 2004 NCAA Indoor Championship gets under way Friday, March 12 at 9:00 a.m. The meet concludes on Saturday, March 13 at 8:20 p.m.
