LAKESIDE, Calif. The Kansas State men’s golf team finished out the fall portion of their schedule, carding its best team score this year, at the Barona Collegiate Cup. The Wildcats fired a third-round 279 en route to a 282-288-279849 (-15) finish. The 15-under 849 performance ties for the second lowest 54-hole score in school history. Despite carding their lowest score since the Nelson Invitational last season, the Wildcats tied for 10th due to the strength of the competition on the par-72, 7,088-yard Barona Creek Golf Club. Brigham Young won the tournament for the second straight year, firing a blistering 42-under 822, 12 strokes ahead of second place Fresno State.
Overall, head coach Tim Norris was pleased with what his team accomplished this week.
“We left some shots out there, but this was a really good way to end the fall,” Norris said. “We have lots of potential. We need to work hard this offseason and come back out in the spring and play closer to our potential.”
James Love of Denver, who carded a first-round score of 10-under 62, went on to take home individual honors as he shot a 15-under 201 for the tournament.
Senior Ben Kern ended out the fall at six-under 210, which ties for the fourth lowest 54-hole score in school history. However, it was only his third-best score this season.
Fellow senior Tyler Cummins carded a final round 67 on his way to a 75-71-67213 (-3), 37th-place finish. His third-round score is the second-lowest round in his career, only to be bested by a 66 he shot during the first round of the Mason Rudolph last year.
Freshmen Joe Kinney and Robert Streb carded their lowest rounds in their early career, both ending the tournament tied for 48th at even par.
One stroke back of Kinney and Streb was sophomore Kyle Yonke, who carded his second-lowest 54-hole score as he fired a one-over 217.
This concludes Kansas State’s fall slate of the 2005-06 season. The Wildcats will start the spring season Feb. 13-14, 2006 at the Matlock Collegiate in Lakeland, Fla.
