
MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State freshman JoAnn Hamlin scored 24 points including the first 12 of the game for the Wildcats as they cruised to a season-opening 91-55 win over Detroit Sunday at Bramlage Coliseum.
Hamlin, who started in her first game as a Wildcat, converted her first four field goal attempts of the game and added three free throws in the first six and a half minutes as Kansas State struggled to an early 12-point tie.
After exchanging baskets to make it a 14-all tie, Kansas State pulled away with a 14-4 run and never looked back. Kansas State’s biggest lead was 37 with 2:11 left in the second half.
Hamlin finished 7-of-9 from the field and converted 10-of-12 free throws to lead all scorers. Junior Twiggy McIntyre added a career-high tying 19 points, and freshman Shalee Lehning contributed 13 points to join Hamlin as the other Wildcats in double figures.
The Wildcats outscored Detroit 40-10 in the paint and scored 31 points off of turnovers. The Titans (1-1) were led in scoring by a 22 point-effort from Lindsey Pasquinzo.
Kansas State (1-0) will travel to Santa Clara (0-1) on Saturday, Nov. 26, to start a two-game road trip that will include a Monday, Nov. 28, stop in Wyoming before returning to Bramlage Coliseum for a matchup with Delaware State on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 5:30 p.m.
