Dec 29, 2005 | Women's Basketball
K-State (9-1) jumped out to an early 23-5 lead in the first half as Claire Coggins drained three 3-pointers in just under nine minutes of play. During that Wildcat run, UNCW (6-3) was held without a bucket for nearly seven minutes until Candace Walker scored on a layup at the 7:58 mark.
The Seahawks’ 19 first-half points was the fourth lowest production in a half by a K-State opponent this season. UNCW came within 15 points in the second half twice, but could not overcome its final 26-point deficit to the Wildcats.
Coggins led all scorers with a game-high 17 points, which included a career-high tying five three-pointers. In the last three games, she has been on fire shooting 63.6 percent (14-22) from downtown. Coggins currently ranks 15th nationally in three-point field goal percentage as of Dec. 19, which is tops in the Big 12 Conference.
The Wildcats outrebounded UNCW, 45-36, with Marlies Gipson grabbing a team-leading nine boards. K-State has now brought down 40-or-more rebounds in seven games this season.
JoAnn Hamlin registered her second-straight double-digit contest with 12 points, while Shalee Lehning and Kimberly Dietz each added 11. Twiggy McIntyre had eight points in her first career start as a Wildcat.
The Wildcats will face host Saint Peter's (4-5) in the championship game of the Holiday Classic tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. (CT). The Peahens defeated American University, 68-54, in the second game of the four-team tournament.
