Big second half lifts Cats over Longwood, 89-60

Dec 05, 2005 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - Lance Harris scored 19 of his career-high 26 points in the second half, and Kansas State pulled away to beat Longwood 89-60 on Monday night.

Cartier Martin added 13 points and David Hoskins and Mario Taybron finished with 12 each for the Wildcats (5-1), who outscored the Lancers 24-2 in the first 11 minutes of the second half after leading by one at the break.

Serge Afeli had 11 rebounds - 10 in the first half - for Kansas State.

Longwood (2-6), playing just its third season in NCAA Division I, led by as many as nine points in the first half but went into a 1-for-18 slump to start the second. The Lancers also committed 24 turnovers, which the Wildcats converted into 28 points.

Kansas State scored the first eight points of the second half before Joel Rowe connected for Longwood with just under 15 1/2 minutes left. The Wildcats then went on a 16-0 tear, capped by Harris' dunk with 9:17 left, for a 60-37 lead before Clayton Morgan's basket with just under 9 minutes left ended Longwood's drought.

Michael Jefferson hit four 3-pointers and led the Lancers with 16 points.

Kansas State, which shot just 38 percent in Saturday's 58-57 loss at Washington State, missed 10 of its first 13 shots Monday night. The Wildcats also struggled on perimeter defense at the other end early in the game, giving up six 3-pointers - three each by Bryan Butler and Michael Jefferson - in the first 10 minutes and 10 seconds.

Butler didn't score again, though, after hitting his third 3-pointer with 11 1/2 minutes to go. And after Jefferson's second 3 gave Longwood its biggest lead, 21-12, with just under 11 minutes left in the first half, Harris' 3-pointer started a 24-14 push that put the Wildcats up 36-35 at the break.

Kansas State took the lead for good, 30-28, on Taybron's dunk with 3:55 left in the half.
