Off the Tee
The Kansas State Wildcats travel to the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, March 11-13. The tournament will be played at the University of Texas Golf Club, which will also host the 2005 Big 12 Tournament. Teams will play 18 holes each day. During the first two rounds, golfers will tee off No. 1 and No. 10 beginning at 8 a.m. Teams will shotgun start the final 18 holes Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
Last Time Out
The Wildcats tied for 12th at the Texas A&M Mo’Morial Feb. 28-March 1. Led by sophomore Kali Quick’s combined 240 (T21st), K-State shot rounds of 328-326-332--986 to tie with Texas Pan-American. Sophomore Helene Robert tied for 38th with a 245.
Betsy Rawls Longhorn History
K-State tied for 16th at the 2004 event with a combined 1007. Before last year, the Wildcats had not competed in this tournament since March 17-19, 2000, when the team finished 12th of 13 teams. This weekend marks only the fifth time in history K-State has competed in this tournament.
Fresh Impact
Freshman Kali Quick took over as team leader during the Central District Invitational. She now averages 77.2 strokes on the season. Quick finished in the top 20 of three fall tournaments. She tied for 19th in the season-opening Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic, tied for fifth in the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational and tied for 14th in the Wildcats’ outing at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Consistent Cat
Sophomore Helene Robert was the most consistent Wildcat over the fall season. Finishing tied for fifth at the Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic to open the season, Robert continued to be the team leader as she tied for 26th at the Jeannine McHaney Invitational and tied for 23rd at the Price’s Give Em Five Challenge. She was the second-best Wildcat at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, finishing tied for 14th behind freshman Kali Quick. The Lac Brome, Quebec, native boasts the second-best stroke average, with 77.7.
Opponent Record
K-State will encounter three teams they have yet to face this season at the Betsy Rawls Longhorm Invitational. The Wildcats have posted a 3-30 record against the previous opponents, defeating Kansas, Nebraska and Texas Christian each once. K-State has yet to see Duke, Oklahoma State and Texas.
Knight Time
Head coach Kristi Knight continues her 10th campaign with the Wildcats this spring. Under Knight, K-State has recorded five tournament wins, including the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational and the Texas A&M Mo’Morial during the 2003-04 season. The Texas native and Oklahoma alum has coached Wildcat teams to four straight NCAA Regional appearances and 32 top-five finishes.
Fall Highlights
The Kansas State women’s golf program opened the 2004 fall season by tying for fourth at the Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic with a combined 907. Sophomore Helene Robert tied for fifth, with a season-best 217. Robert again led the Wildcats in their ninth-place finish at the Price’s Give Em Five Challenge as she tied for 23rd. In the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, K-State finished fifth, with three golfers in the top 20 and five of seven student-athletes recording their season-best. Freshman Kali Quick paced the Wildcats at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate to close the fall campaign as she tied for 14th with a career-best 223.
