K-State Begins Big 12 Play with Win

MANHATTAN - After a shaky start to the day, Kansas State women’s tennis extended its winning streak to three, coming back to defeat Texas Tech, 5-2, on Saturday at Washburn Tennis Facility. Senior Maria Rosenberg won her 74th career singles match and is just three short of the school record.
The Wildcats (4-3, 1-0 Big 12) dropped the doubles point, getting swept by the Lady Raiders (2-6, 0-1 Big 12). The loss by the tandem of junior Jessica Simosa and senior Judith Diaz to Cigdem Duru and Janet Durham, 9-7, was the first defeat of the season for the duo. It is just the second time this season K-State has lost the doubles point.
K-State immediately recovered from the losses as freshmen Tamar Kvaratskhelia and Fernanda Da Valle and senior Maria Rosenberg won in straight sets. Kvaratskhelia dispatched of Janet Durham, 6-1, 6-1 to improve her overall record to 20-4 and 5-2 in dual matches. Da Valle won the first set over Lakann Wagley in a tie break, 7-6 at the number six position. Da Valle ended Wagley chance of winning the second set by winning 6-0. The freshman from Mendoza, Argentina is on a three-match winning streak.
Rosenberg propelled K-State to a 3-1 advantage by beating Cigdem Duru, 6-3, 6-0. The win for the Manhattan, Kan. leaves her just three wins shy of tying Petra Sedlmajerova’s school record of 77. Rosenberg is 18-8 on the season and 6-1 in dual match play this spring.
The match turned in the Wildcats favor, when freshman Tereza Prochazkova defeated Katja Kovacic, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. The win was the third straight for the Brno, Czech Republic product.
Junior Jessica Simosa gave K-State its fifth point of the afternoon by defeating Tara Browning, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4. Simosa has now won four straight singles matches and improved to 5-2 in dual matches this spring.
Kansas State is above the .500 mark for the first time since February 21, 2004, when the team had a 3-2 record. It is also the longest win streak sinc the 2003 season, when the Wildcats won six straight from March 19 to April 15.
The Wildcats will now embark on a eight-match road trip, spanning the remainder of March and will stretch until mid-April. Next weekend K-State will take on Oklahoma State, March 11, and Oklahoma, March 12.
