K-State Selected as Top Seed in UTR Sports NIT Championship

The Wildcats will face Northern Illinois in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team accepted a bid to the NIT Championship set for Tuesday-Friday (May 5-8) in Rome, Ga., at the Rome Tennis Center, hosted by Berry College.
The #1 seed Wildcats will face #8 Northern Illinois University at 8 a.m. CT. This will be the first meeting against the Huskies. The winning team will then proceed to the semifinal match on Wednesday (May 6) at 8 a.m. CT.
"Glad our program was selected for this opportunity to compete in May," head coach Jordan Smith said. "That's the main focus from our team each year is to be playing in May. Hopefully, this week will spark a consistent tradition of that and our players give their best."
The six other teams in the women's field include #2 North Texas, #3 Arkansas State, #4 North Alabama, #5 Army, #6 McNeese State and #7 Charleston.
UNI went 17-8, 3-5 in the MAC, ending the season with a 2-3 record in conference play. Northern Illinois competed in the NIT Championship last season as well, falling in the quarterfinal round to Washington State, the eventual 2025 Champions.
The Wildcats ended the regular season with an 8-13, 3-10 Big 12 record in the eighth season under Smith. During the season the Wildcats won the doubles point 10 times, aiding in seven victories. junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav led the team in singles play, with a 9-8 dual record this season, while three Cats had seven wins, freshman Varvara Bernovich, sophomore Chanel Rustemova and freshman Diana Smolinska.
K-State had two Wildcats named to All-Big 12 teams, Maralgoo and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav to the First Team Doubles. Individual accolades included Maralgoo to Second Team Singles and Martaa to the Freshman Team.
This is the fourth NIT Championship by UTR Sports, it's inaugural Championship back in 2023.
