MANHATTAN - Although only one Wildcat was taken in last weekend’s NFL Draft, six more Wildcat seniors are keeping their NFL dreams alive. As of Friday, former Wildcats Jon Doty, Tony Madison, Joe Rheem, and Cedrick Williams have signed free agent contracts with NFL teams. Andrew Bulman and Mike Johnson both were invited to rookie mini-camps.
Doty, who appeared in 37 games, including 26 starts throughout his Wildcat career, signed with the Carolina Panthers. A tight end coming out of high school, Doty transformed into a ficture at the left tackle position.
Madison, who came to K-State from Highland Community College, signed with the Miami Dolphins. Madison did not see any game action his junior year, but came on strong to end his collegiate career. As a senior, he hauled in 13 receptions to gain 204 yards, and two touchdowns, including an 86-yard bomb from Dylan Meier against Kansas.
Rheem, who appeared in 42 games over his Wildcat career, signed a free agent contract with the Buffalo Bills. Six of those games came as a true freshman, only one of two true freshmen who played in 2001 (Darren Sproles). Over his career, Rheem hit 38 of 49 field goals (78%) and 173 out of 183 PATs (95%), including 37-38 on PATs his senior season, finishing up as K-State's No. 3 all-time scorer with 291 points.
A junior college transfer from Garden City Community College, Cedrick Williams signed a free agent contract with the Houston Texans. Williams played in all 26 games in his Wildcat career, including 21 starts. As a junior, Williams intercepted five passes and had six break-ups.
Plagued by injuries throughout his career, sixth-year senior Andrew Bulman was invited to try-out at the Cincinnati Bengals rookie mini-camp, which takes place this weekend. During his Wildcat career, Bulman recorded 17 tackles in 17 games. One of the strongest Wildcats on the team, Bulman owns the K-State bench press record of 666 lbs. and the incline press record of 579 lbs.
A versatile offensive linemen who played both guard and center as a Wildcat, Johnson was invited to the Kansas City Chiefs rookie mini-camp, also held this weekend. In his career, Johnson played in 41 games, with 37 starts. Johnson played left guard his sophomore and junior seasons, then switched to center for his senior campaign.
