Wildcats Drop Three Spots to Finish 20th at Central Regional
May 21, 2005 | Men's Golf
NOTRE DAME, Ind. The Kansas State men's golf team equaled their second round score of 291 during the final round of the 2005 NCAA Central Regional at the par-70, 7,011-yard Warren Golf Course. The Wildcats finished in 20th place, with a combined team score of 881 (299-291-291). K-State got off to a good start on the front nine as they shot 5-over, including a one-under performance by senior Matt Van Cleave. The back nine started out disastrous for the Wildcats as they shot 6-over par on the first five holes of the back nine. However, they recovered to save par the rest of the way.
"We had a great effort today, but just came up short," said head coach Tim Norris. "The hole we dug for ourselves in the first round was just too deep to get out of. Today's pin placement was very difficult for our players to overcome."
Oklahoma State, who led after 36 holes, faltered during their final round by shooting a 13-over, 293, leaving the door open for Augusta State to take home the team title. The Jaguars won the event going away with a combined team score of 849 (284-284-281, +9), nine strokes better than the second-place Cowboys.
Augusta State's Kalle Edberg was the individual medalist, beating out Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin by one stroke. Edberg fired a 3-under, 67 in the final round to finish with a tournament score of 205 (70-68-67, -5). Martin was in the lead heading into the final round, but fired a one-over, 71.
Van Cleave led today's round and the tournament individually for the Wildcats as he ended out his collegiate career. In the final round, Van Cleave shot a one-over, 71. The Maryville, Mo., native, was in the hunt to qualify individually for nationals as he was one-under on the front nine, but double-bogeyed No. 10 and pared-out the rest of the round.
"He (Van Cleave) shot well on the front nine, but fell into a little trouble on No. 10," Norris commented. "However, he battled back the rest of the way like a champion. For his career, Matt has definitely set the bar high for everyone that follows. It's a shame that he can't go on."
Also competing for the Wildcats were juniors Tyler Cummins, Jonathan James, Ben Kern, and freshman Kyle Yonke. Cummins tied for 36th with a score of 218 (76-69-73, +8), Kern tied for 88th, carding a 225 (76-77-72, +15), right behind him tying for 95th was James who finished with a score of 226 (77-74-75, +16), and the freshman Yonke tied for 127th with a score of 234 (75-78-81, +24).
This concludes play for K-State this season. The Wildcats get the 2005-2006 season underway with the Cleveland State Invitational on Sept. 12-13.
