Win over No. 14 Oklahoma in 1993 tapped as No. 7 game of Snyder Era
Jul 16, 2005 | Football
MANHATTAN, Kan. Considered to be the break-through game of the Bill Snyder era, the fans’ pick as Powercat Passport’s seventh-most popular game firmly established Kansas State as rising power on the national college football scene.
Kansas State had not beaten a ranked team since 1971 and it had been over two decades since the Wildcats had defeated the mighty Oklahoma Sooners. But that all changed on Oct. 30, 1993, when K-State dominated the 14th-ranked team in the country and kick-started a run of 11 straight bowl berths with a 21-7 victory over Oklahoma at KSU Stadium.
Chad May, who still ranks second on Kansas State’s all-time career passing chart, tossed touchdown passes to Mitch Running and Kevin Lockett and ran for one of his own to lead the Wildcat offense.
Meanwhile, the K-State defense pitched a shutout for three quarters. All told, the Cats forced eight OU fumbles, recovering three, and held the Sooners to just 58 yards rushing behind double-digit tackle performances by Steve Hanks and Kenny McIntyre.
Saturday’s webcast of the 1993 Kansas State vs. Oklahoma game is the fourth of a 10-game countdown to the start of the 2005 season on Powercat Passport, the premium multimedia service of k-statesports.com.
Over 2,000 fan ballots were received in online voting that began on April 27th. The Wildcats’ victory over Tennessee in the 2001 Cotton Bowl was chosen at the fans’ No. 10 pick, while K-State’s thrilling win over Nebraska from the 2000 season was selected as the No. 9 game. Last week, the fans’ pick as the eighth-most popular game, K-State’s 2002 win over USC, was revealed and became the third classic webcast in its entirety as part of Powercat Passport’s countdown to the 2005 season.
The weekly countdown of the 10 most popular games of the Bill Snyder era will continue each Saturday through August 27th, when the fans' pick as the No. 1 game is webcast.
Each week’s game will be announced on Friday afternoon on k-statesports.com.
In conjunction with the Top 10 countdown, a one-year subscription discount of $10 is being offered on Powercat Passport, which provides hundreds of hours of video from Wildcat coaches' shows as well as game-day features, to season highlights, exclusive interviews with players and coaches and classic games like the Fan's Top 10.
Last season, Powercat Passport was the only site on the Internet for fans to access live streaming video of Wildcat football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball and promises to once again be the leader in live Internet coverage of Kansas State athletics in 2005-06.
