Massey Selected in CBA Draft

BOISE, Idaho Former Kansas State forward Jeremiah Massey was selected in the fifth round of the 20^th annual Continental Basketball Association (CBA) by the Dakota Wizards on Tuesday evening.

Massey was one of six players drafted by the Wizards, who have won two of the past four CBA Championships (2002, 2004) and were eliminated in the Western Conference Finals in 2005. Joining Massey on the team’s draft chart include Chuck Hayes (Kentucky), Chris Taft (Pittsburgh), John Reimold (Bowling Green), Matt Vaughn (Colorado Christian) and Glen McGowen (Pepperdine). He will be coached by former Baylor coach Dave Bliss, who was hired as the team’s head coach on Aug. 26.

Massey, who becomes the second Wildcat to be taken in the CBA Draft in the past two years, was among five players from the Big 12 taken in the 2005 draft, including Stephen Graham (Oklahoma State), John Lucas (Oklahoma State), Ivan McFarlin (Oklahoma State) and Keith Langford (Kansas).

One of the top two-year players in Kansas State history, Massey finished his career ranking 25^th on the school’s all-time scoring list with 931 points. His 16.3 career scoring average placed ninth in school history and sixth among two-year players, while his point total was the fifth-highest among two-year players and were the most since Mitch Richmond scored 1,327 points from 1987-88.

As a senior, Massey averaged a team-best 17.9 points and 6.9 rebounds en route to earning second team All-Big 12 honors from both the league coaches and The Associated Press. He was one of only three players (Wayne Simien and Joey Graham) in the Big 12 Conference to rank among the league’s top 10 in scoring, field goal percentage and rebounding in 2004-05.

A native of Detroit, Mich., Massey came to Kansas State after a two-year stint at Oxnard Community College, where he selected as the tri-California Community College Player of the Year and a first team junior college All-American as a senior. He led the state in both scoring (23.8 ppg.) and rebounding (12.5 rpg.), while he ranked eighth in field goal percentage (.618).

The CBA, which at 59 years old is the oldest professional basketball league in the world, has eight franchises split into Eastern and Western Divisions. The teams include the Albany Patroons (Albany, N.Y.), Gary Steelheads (Gary, Ind.), Idaho Stampede (Boise, Idaho), Michigan Mayhem (Muskegon, Mich.), Rockford Lightning (Rockford, Ill.), Sioux Falls Skyforce (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Yakima Sun Kings (Yakima, Wash.). Each team plays a 48-game schedule, which runs from Nov. 19 to March 13.
