K-State Soars By Eagles in Second Half

Nov 25, 2006 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - Lance Harris hit five 3-pointers and scored a career high of 26 points, and Kansas State pulled away late for a 68-57 victory over Coppin State Saturday night.

Cartier Martin hit three 3s and scored all but two of his 13 points in the last seven minutes for the Wildcats. He became Kansas State's first 1,000-point career scorer since Askia Jones passed that mark in the 1992-93 season.

David Hoskins added 11 points and Akeem Wright finished with 10 for the Wildcats (4-1), who struggled early against the Eagles (1-4) but won their 13th straight nonconference home game.

It wasn't easy, though. Kansas State trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half and didn't take the lead for good until just under seven minutes were left in the game.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Martin and Harris broke a 46-all tie and started a 14-4 run, capped by Wright's 3-point play, that put the Wildcats up 60-50 with just over 4 1/2 minutes to go.

Coppin State, which had just two field goals in the final five minutes, never got closer than eight points after that.

Tywain McKee led the Eagles with 19 points and was the only Coppin State player in double figures.

Kansas State coach Bob Huggins pulled all of his starters but point guard Blake Young with just over three minutes gone in the game and Coppin State on its way to a 13-0 run for a 23-5 lead.

Huggins used 13 players in the first half and didn't have all five starters on the court at the same time again until just over 14 1/2 minutes remained in the game. Less than a minute later, Huggins substituted again.

Coppin State led 21-8 with just under 11 minutes left in the first half, but Kansas State closed the half with a 10-0 run, capped by Harris' layup as time expired, for a 30-all tie.

Kansas State took 22 free throws to Coppin State's eight, but shot just 59 percent (13-for-22) from the line. The Wildcats also hurt themselves with 19 turnovers, which the Eagles converted into 19 points.
