Late Three Sinks Wildcats, 63-61

Feb 04, 2006 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - Terrell Harris' 3-pointer with 1 minute to go gave Oklahoma State a 62-61 lead and the Cowboys held on for a 63-61 victory Saturday over Kansas State, which blew a nine-point lead in the last 5 minutes.

The victory snapped a four-game losing skid for the Cowboys (13-9, 3-5 Big 12), their longest conference losing streak in Eddie Sutton's 16 years as head coach.

Oklahoma State's Mario Boggan hit the first of two free throws with 3.6 seconds to go, and Kansas State inbounded the ball with 2.3 ticks left on the clock. But the Wildcats barely got the ball across midcourt and never got off a shot, ending a bitter loss for the Wildcats (12-7, 3-5).

The Wildcats had a 56-47 lead with about 5 minutes remaining when Cartier Martin canned a pair of free throws. But then Jamaal Brown hit two 3-pointers in a 9-0 Oklahoma State spree, capped by Boggan's two free throws that made it 59-all with 1:46 to play.

Kansas State got off to a quick second-half getaway when Mario Taybron stole the ball at midcourt and drove in for a layup with 13:12 to go, capping a 14-6 run that turned a 30-30 halftime tie into a 44-36 Kansas State lead.

Shortly before tipoff, newly hired football coach Ron Prince took the microphone and urged the crowd to make as much noise as it could to support the Wildcats. It was the first sellout for a non-Kansas game since Jan. 11, 2003.

The Cowboys, who have not lost in Manhattan since 2002, led briefly by six points in the first half after coach Jim Wooldridge threw off his suit coat while arguing a foul call and then was charged with a technical.

Wooldridge, under great pressure to get the Wildcats into the NCAA tournament in his sixth season at Kansas State, continued to rage as JamesOn Curry went to the line. A moment later, Boggan sank a pair of foul shots to make it 20-14.

Boggan, the Cowboys' top scorer this season, picked up his fourth foul just 2 1/2 minutes into the first half and wound up with 11 points. JamesOn Curry led the Cowboys with 12 points and Brown had nine.

David Hoskins had 18 for Kansas State and Lance Harris had 14. Martin had eight points, the first time in 20 games he was held under double figures.
