K-State in Sixth Heading into Final Day
Apr 15, 2006 | Men's Golf
BRYAN, Texas - The Kansas State men's golf team sits in sixth place after day one of the Aggie Invitational. The Wildcats carded a two-round total of 31-over par 607 (302-305) on the par 72, 7,235-yard Traditions Golf Club. K-State is seven shots back of fifth-place SMU and three shots ahead of No. 9 Baylor.
With the Wildcat's back-to-back rounds of over 300, it marked the first time since the Wexford Plantation K-State has shot consecutive plus-300 rounds. However windy conditions in the afternoon played a large part in high scores all around, with eight out of the 12 teams recording a higher second round score than what they shot during morning round.
Head coach Tim Norris is eager to see what the Wildcats can accomplish during the final round.
"This was respectable, but it wasn't our best golf," Norris said. "The wind really picked up in the afternoon and it made the play tougher in the second round. Hopefully, tomorrow we can put the course knowledge to work and close out on a low round."
Host school Texas A&M leads the field with a 1-over par 577 and sits an amazing 15 shots ahead of second-place Texas Tech. The Aggies were the only squad to fire a round of under par golf, carding a 1-under 287 during the second round.
Texas A&M's Robert Gates is leads individually as he carded a 2-under par 142 over the first 36 holes. Baylor's Ryan Baca and Texas Tech's Oscar Floren are tied for second at 1-under par 143. Gates, Baca and Floren are the only three individuals under par heading into the final round.
Senior Tyler Cummins led the Wildcats on the first day after a 76-73-149 (+5) performance. He is currently in a five-way tie for 11th.
"The course sets up well for him," said Norris. "He was able to hit enough greens and make enough putts today."
Three shots behind Cummins are Ben Kern and Robert Streb, both shooting an 8-over par 152. The two golfers are currently tied for 23rd.
Kyle Yonke started off the day strong as he fired a 2-over par 74, but slipped during the second round, shooting an 8-over par 80. Yonke heads into the final round tied for 32nd at 10-over par 154. Four shots back of Yonke is Joe Kinney with a two-round score of 158.
The Kansas State men's golf team will conclude the Aggie Invitational on Sunday. Joe Kinney will start off K-State's day with a 7:38 a.m. tee time on hole No. 1. Each Wildcat will start after that in eight-minute increments. Live stats will still be available by logging onto www.golfstat.com. Results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com as soon as they become available.
