Wildcats Finish Season 18th; Streb Advances to NCAA Championship

CHARDON, Ohio - The Kansas State men's golf team recorded its best round of the tournament and jumped four spots to finish 18th during the final round of the 2006 NCAA Central Regional. The Wildcats carded an 18-hole score of 6-under par 290, thanks to freshman Robert Streb's round of 3-under par 68, the second-best individual round of the day. Streb finished the tournament at 3-over par 216 and will advance to the 2006 NCAA Championship as an individual.
Although the team was unable to make it past regionals, head coach Tim Norris was pleased with the performance of Streb.
"The guys have played hard all year, so there's nothing to be ashamed of," Norris said. "I am really excited about Robert and what he's done. It is good story with more to come."
Streb, an Edmond, Okla., native, earned his berth into the NCAA Championship by being one of the top two individuals not on an advancing team. The freshman was tied for 14th after a 15th-hole birdie. At that point, he was in place to be the second individual qualifier. With a bogey on No. 16, Streb dropped out of the top two. However, he collected himself and fired birdies on 17 and 18 to capture the top individual qualifying spot.
Streb finished out the tournament at 3-over par 216, the second-best individual 54-hole score in K-State regional history. His tie for 12th ties former Wildcat A.J. Elgert's placing in 2004, the same year Elgert qualified for the NCAA Championship. Streb becomes just the third Wildcat to advance to the NCAA Championship.
"I was just trying to put up a good score to help out the team," Streb said. "I didn't realize that I had a shot to qualify individually. I really wish the whole team can go, but I'll try to represent them to the best of my ability in Oregon."
Oklahoma State won the tournament going away, carding a 4-under par 280 during the final round to finish the tournament at 7-under 845. The Cowboys finished an impressive 16 shots better than second-place Northwestern.
Oklahoma State also had the top two individual finishers in Jonathan Moore and Zach Robinson, who finished at 8-under par 205 and 5-under par 208, respectively.
K-State sophomore Kyle Yonke rebounded from a second-round 80 to card a 1-over par 72. Yonke finished the tournament tied for 75th at 14-over par 227.
Seniors Ben Kern, Tyler Cummins and Jonathan James saw their collegiate careers come to an end on Saturday. Kern carded a three-round total of 230. Cummins and James shot a 234 and 236, respectively.
As a team, the Wildcats concluded their 72nd season of golf on Saturday. Streb will participate in the 2006 NCAA Championship, May 31-June 3, at Crosswaters Golf Course in Sunriver, Ore.
