Cummins Advances to US Amateur

PARKVILLE, Mo. - Former Wildcat golfer Tyler Cummins continued his impressive summer as he qualified for the US Amateur at the par 71, 6,862-yard National Golf Club of Kansas City on Monday.
Cummins finished third with a 36-hole score of 73-69-142 (E) to grab the last qualifying spot in the Kansas City sectional qualifier. This is the first time the Olathe, Kan., native has qualified for the Amateur, and continues a six-year streak with at least one current or former Kansas State golfer qualifying for the tournament.
Jon Curran took home first-place honors with a 4-under par 138. Tyler Docking came in second at 2-under par 140.
The US Amateur is the oldest golf championship in the country and started one day before the inaugural US Open. Some notable champions of the Amateur include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Mark O'Meara, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Wood.
The 106th US Amateur will be held Aug. 21-27 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.
Kansas Junior Section Team Championship: Future Wildcats Joe Ida and Ross Geubelle took part in the Kansas Junior Section Team Championship, Sunday through Tuesday, at Crestwood Country Club in Pittsburg, Kan.
Ida, playing in the Special Invitee group, captured first placing following a two-round score of eight-under par 136 (67-69). The Fort Scott, Kan., native, outlasted Noah Smithson by two strokes.
Geubelle tied for second in the 18-year-old division after carding a 70-72-142 (-2).
