K-State’s Kyle Smell and Robert Streb carded the low scores for the Wildcats with a pair of 2-over 74’s. Smell finished second on the team behind Mitchell Gregson for the tournament with a 75-70-74219 (+3) and finished in a tie for 27th. Streb was K-State’s third lowest scorer with a 75-72-74221 (+5).
“We didn’t have anybody play exceptionally well,” K-State head coach Tim Norris said. “They tried as best as they could. The course was challenging, the greens were a little firmer today, but there were still plenty of red numbers out there. We didn’t quite hit enough good shots.”
Gregson, who fired back-to-back rounds under par to open the competition on Monday shot a 5-over 77 on Tuesday. He still finished with the Wildcats lowest tournament total at 70-71-77218 (+2), but failed to crack the top-20 for the first time this season as he finished tied for 22nd.
Joe Ida added the fourth counting score for K-State with a 78. The sophomore from Fort Scott, Kan., finished tied for 42nd after shooting a 73-72-78223 (+7). Freshman Daniel Wood concluded his collegiate team debut with a 76-75-83234 (+18).
As a team the Wildcats shot 293-285-303881 (+17) and finished five strokes out of a three-way tie for sixth. The University of Arizona continued its dominance with its third consecutive sub-par round and finished ahead of Iowa State for the tournament title. The ninth place finish by the Wildcats matches last year’s finish at the Wolf Pack Classic.
Kansas State will get a week off before returning to the West when they compete in the Club Glove Intercollegiate on Oct. 22-23 in Somis, Calif. Both Wildcat golf programs will be dedicating the new K-State Golf Indoor Practice Facility at Colbert Hills at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14.
