K-State Rolls to Season-Opening Win

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kimberly Dietz and Shalee Lehning each scored 16 points as Kansas State rumbled to an 88-61 season-opening win over the Washington Huskies in Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday.
Kansas State, which started the game on a 26-9 run, won its ninth straight home-opening game and first ever contest with the Huskies.
The Wildcats led 43-30 at the half while shooting 16-for-31 (51.6 percent). K-State only got better as the game went on, shooting 18-of-30 (60 percent) in the second and led by as many as 29.
In addition to double-digit points, Lehning added 11 assists for the sixth double-double of her career. Lehning's assists also moved her into a three-way tie for third all-time on the career assist leaders list.
"Everybody did a good job tonight and it just happened that some lanes opened for me tonight," Lehning said. "I had some turnovers so I obviously have some room for improvement."
Marlies Gipson and Ashley Sweat joined Dietz and Lehning as Wildcats scoring in double figures. The forwards helped K-State to a 46-22 edge in points in the paint.
Kansas State's pressuring defense limited the Huskies to just 37.5 percent shooting from the field and forced 26 turnovers which the Wildcats were able to turn into 31 points.
Washington's Katelan Redmon scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds in the losing effort.
Kansas State continues a two-game season-opening home stand when the Wildcats host Southern Utah in Bramlage Coliseum on Monday at 7 p.m.
