K-State Survives Scare from Northwestern

Sweat, who finished with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting and a team-high seven rebounds, pushed the Wildcats (2-0) along in the second half by scoring 12 straight points to key K-State early in the stanza and bringing the Wildcats to within two at 39-37 with 9:20 to play.
Northwestern (0-2) pushed out to a 50-44 lead on an Amy Jaeschke layup with 4:15 to play. After a K-State timeout, Gipson tallied a layup and two free throws to bring the Wildcats to within two, 50-48. After a Northwestern shot clock violation, Lehning put the Wildcats up for the first time since halftime with a three-point field goal from the right wing, 51-50.
K-State’s defense held on the ensuing Northwestern possession and Lehning sliced down the lane for an acrobatic layup for a 53-50 lead with 45 seconds to play. After a jumper by Meshia Reed brought Northwestern to within one, Lehning and Gipson made two free throws apiece to seal the win.
Gipson finished with 18 points, including 10 in the first half, and three rebounds. Lehning tallied 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting, a game-high seven assists and three rebounds. With the seven assists, Lehning tied Megan Mahoney (2001-05) for the career assists record at
