Wildcats Capture Championship at Colbert
Sep 23, 2008 | Men's Golf
“As a team, I thought we did an excellent job when we got the lead and held the lead and you got to have the ability to take it low when you are playing well,” said head coach Tim Norris. “Mitch is one of those guys, Joe Ida and Robert Streb played some good golf, and Joe Kinney and Ross Geubelle made their contributions as well. We had some other players step up and play well and I tell my players that there is no distinction between the top five and the next four. All nine players were wearing purple, representing the university and I thought they did a real nice job.”
UMKC carded a 36-over 900 (308-294-290), earning the team second place overall, The Kangaroos finished 10 strokes better than third place team Western Illinois, who snuck into the top three with a 46-over 910. The Leathernecks had the lowest 18-hole score of the tournament with 288 on Tuesday.
Wildcat golfer Mitchell Gregson took home the individual championship with a final-round score of 4-under par 68, giving him a 54-hole score of even par 216. Gregson was able to birdie three of the last four holes to capture the crown.
“We felt like we had a really good team this year and we wanted to get off to a good start and winning our home tournament is definitely a good way to start it off. We are pretty happy with the way we played this week and hopefully we can continue our success next week,” added Gregson. “I played really well, I was fortunate enough to birdie three of the last four holes because I was chasing the guy I was playing with, who ended up getting second, and was fortunate enough to pass him up on the last hole with a birdie.”
“Mitchell is a tough guy comes from a sports background, played baseball in high school, so when I looked at his score card and saw that he was keeping track with everyone in the group it just shows that Mitch’s mindset was trying to win the golf tournament today,” added Norris. ”He was hitting the shots done the stretch and had a great birdie on 18 to seal it.”
Senior Robert Streb carded his second under-par round of the tournament Tuesday with a 1-under 71. The
Jason Schulte and Daniel Wood rounded out the top 20 with an 11th and 17th place finish, respectively. Ross Geubelle ended the tournament in 21st place with a 17-over 230 and junior Joe Kinney placed 24th with a 15-over 231.
Spencer Alefs, a junior, placed 22nd with a 22-over par 238, while sophomore Kyle Smell placed 47th after a 26-over 242.
