Turnovers Trip K-State Comeback

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State women's basketball team battled tough but came up short against Northwestern, falling 53-50.

K-State was led by senior Ashley Sweat who scored 19 points. Sweat was 6-of-13 from the field including 3-of-6 from three point range. She was also 4-of-4 on free throws. Kari Kincaid and Taelor Karr each added eight points for the Wildcats while Branshea Brown gathered 10 rebounds to lead the team.

Northwestern had three players score in double digits with center Amy Jaeschke leading the pack with 16. Kristin Cartwright added 13 and Brittany Orban contributed 12 to the effort.

K-State struggled in the first half shooting 30 percent from the field but went into halftime down only 29-24. Down by as much as 11 points, K-State was able to tie the game at 33-33 with 16:07 remaining in the second half, but Northwestern would score nine straight points to regain the lead. The Wildcats would cut into the lead and pull within striking distance of number of times afterward only to see Northwestern go on another run to reopen the lead.

In the final minute of the contest K-State had a chance to tie the game and force overtime. After another push to narrow the lead, K-State trailed by just two points before turnovers brought the comeback to a halt.

The Wildcats turned the ball over twice trailing by just two points in the final minute of the contest. K-State also could not get a 3-point shot off before the buzzer to tie the game after a made free throw by Northwestern.

K-State travels to Las Vegas for the Duel in the Desert where they will face Hawaii at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. The other two teams participating in the tournament will be UNLV and Virginia Commonwealth with action on Sunday and Monday.
