Wildcats Scratch Past Tigers

Feb 10, 2010 | Women's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. - In a defensive duel, it took nearly every tick of the clock and a late offensive run led by Taelor Karr and Kari Kincaid for Kansas State to seal a victory over Missouri, 37-33, on Wednesday evening. The Wildcats captured the regular season series against the Tigers with the win and moved to 25-10 against the Tigers in games played in Manhattan.

In the first half, Kansas State (12-11, 4-5 Big 12) shot just 6-of-23 from the field, while Missouri shot a 21.4-percent from the floor. The Wildcats went into the locker room with a three-point lead over Missouri, 16-13. The 13 points allowed by the Wildcats equaled the 13 K-State allowed to Kansas on Jan. 9 in the second half during K-State's 59-35 win over the Jayhawks. Coming out of the break, the defensive slugfest continued as neither team could entirely pull away.

With less than four minutes remaining in the back-and-forth battle, Karr connected consecutively on a two-point jumper and three-point basket to give K-State a 33-29 lead. After a pair of Christine Flores free throws brought Missouri to within two with 2:23 to play, Kincaid connected on a fadeaway jumper from the right baseline as the shot clock expired to give K-State a four-point advantage with 1:52 remaining. Kincaid closed out the Tigers with a pair of free throws and a key rebound in the closing seconds.

In a fairly balanced Wildcat offensive outing, Karr led all Wildcats in scoring in the contest with 10 points. Freshman Brittany Chambers registered a game-high and set a new career-high on the glass with 12 rebounds.

The Wildcats will begin a two-game road stretch as they travel to College Station, Texas on Saturday to face No. 13/10 Texas A&M in hopes to snag their second conference road win. The game at Reed Arena is set for a 7 p.m., tip-off and can be heard live on the K-State Sports Network.
