K-State Smothers Jackrabbits in Win, 63-46

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Kansas State used a stifling school-record tying defensive effort in the first half to hold back South Dakota State at Frost Arena on Saturday night, 63-46. The Wildcats have now won three straight for the second time this season.
K-State (6-2) saw three players reach double figures led by Brittany Chambers with a game-high 18 points, which included a 4-of-9 performance from beyond the arc. Just behind Chambers in scoring was junior Branshea Brown with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Brown also contributed two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
Joining Chambers and Brown was junior guard Mariah White. The product of Midwest City, Okla., tallied 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
South Dakota State (6-4) was paced by Katie Lingle with 10 points.
Kansas State built a 20-3 lead to start the game off of its defense, as the run was capped by a jump shot from White on the left wing with 8:07 remaining. The Jackrabbits were held without a field goal for the first 13 minutes of the game before Jennie Sunnarborg connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key with 7:10 remaining to narrow the deficit to 20-8.
K-State continued to pour on the defensive pressure, as the Wildcats held South Dakota State to a 2-of-25 performance from the field to lead 31-14 at the break. The two made field goals tied the school record for fewest field goals allowed in a half (2 – vs. Mississippi Valley State, Dec. 1, 2006). The 8.0 field goal percentage by the Jackrabbits was a season-low performance by a K-State opponent.
The Wildcats continued its strong defensive effort into the second half, as the Jackrabbits finished the contest 11-of-51 from the field for a .216 field goal percentage. K-State built its largest lead of 24, 46-22, with 11:47 to play on a Jalana Childs layup.
The lone area South Dakota State had an edge on K-State was at the foul line. The Jackrabbits connected on 20-of-25 attempts from the charity stripe while K-State was 9-of-14.
Kansas State will have a week of preparation before heading to the BTI Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Dec. 18-20. The Wildcats will face North Dakota State, Northwestern and UNLV with all three games slated for a 9:30 p.m., start in the Cox Pavilion.
